The Green Door Tavern

I don't get the appeal of this place--- the prices seem average, the place has a musty smell, and the service was slow. But I guess anywhere you go on a Friday night, the service will the slow. The waitress we had was sweet and friendly, we just had to wait forever for our order to be taken, and for our drinks, and for the checks, ya know, the whole thing. The decor of the place is interesting-- not to my taste, but then again I don't really like to frequent dive bars--- I just wanted to check out this place for myself and see how it was. I didn't realize how small 5 ounces was until our table ordered the 5 ounce beers--- but it's a good way to try new beers.
Food wise it is solid, way too solid. The fried chicken sandwich is a top ten I have had in Chicago. Overall, though it is just a great spot. Crazy decor and always a great collection of people.
I ordered off grub hub and when I got to the restaurant my order wasn't ready for pickup because their Internet was down. So I sat down and ordered a beer and waited on my food. The food came out very quickly and they waved the cost of the beer. Very impressed with their customer service, and the food here is great.
Strong Drinks. Good Food. Good Times. One of the oldest bars in Chicago, GDT is a great place to hang with friends after a long day of work. The fries are fantastical and the burgers are thick and juicy. I ordered the Bootlegger, a burger topped with american cheese, thick apple-wood bacon (I got extra), over easy egg (I opted for fried hard), and whiskey ketchup. Talk about 1/2 pounds of goodness. Prices are fair and the portions are generous. We were well taken of as the staff was attentive and kept our glasses filled during our long stay.
Stopped here after my boyfriend & I's first date. This place is simple and a little divey, but it was not crowded, service was good, and some Billy Joel was playing. It's a down to earth spot in a neighborhood that has a lot of somewhat unapproachable places. It has that "Cheers" kinda feel. The wood inside makes it feel very warm. Gin and tonic was perfect.
