Mad Mex

Lunch time. Waiter has 2 tables other than ours. Restaurant is not visibly busy. My partner ordered a glass of water with his tea because he was rather thirsty and didn't want to have waiter running back and forth for refills. I ordered a tea and chips and salsa as our appetizer. Waiter brought out 2 teas 5 minutes later. No water. No chips. No salsa. We order our entrees (two chimis). 30 seconds later he's back to see if we need refills on tea. We hadn't taken two sips. This is the last time we see the waiter until the check. 20 minutes later the hostess brings out our entrees, we inform her we ordered chips and salsa, implying that we thought we should have had them before the entrees. She (the hostess) brings them right out. We are focused on the entrees and leave the chips to snack on afterwards. We finish our teas halfway through the entrees. No sight of waiter for refills. The food is spicy but we manage to finish entrees without a beverage. The chips and salsa barely get touched, because it is to spicy to handle without having something to drink. We stack our entrees plates on top of one another and sit our empty tea glasses on the edge of the table, hoping someone may notice that we need refills. No one does. We continue to sit there for another 20-25 minutes before the waiter finally comes out and asks if we are ready for the check. Doesn't offer refills. Brings check, collects payment, and makes slight reference to the fact that our chips and salsa to a while to get to us. Needless to say, we won't be back.
Mad Mex becomes packed in Shadyside if you go during Happy Hour. It isn't worth it to sit at the bar and sometimes not worth waiting for a table. During lunch and dinner, though, this location has much more seating, and the service is better because the waiters aren't torn by the maxed out number of patrons. Like the other Mad Mex locations, the food is spot on, and the margaritas are just about perfect.
I've worked here for a few months now, the menu is flexible for vegetarians and vegans and can accommodate most any allergy or preference. Try the seasonal items like the gobblerito or flavor of the month margs!
I like this MadMex a lot but I have had some ups and downs with service here. The place does get crowded at times.... and I have had a long wait time at the bar where bar tenders have looked right at me and kept going it's kinda weird. I have had good times there as well. One bar tender knows what beer I drink so when he there I'm OK some of the other people working the bar are ify.
Great atmosphere. Great food.
