La Folie is one of the oldest (if not the oldest?) French restaurants in San Francisco. They have been around 27+ years in San Fran, a city with new restaurants every month, so they are doing something right! I would say they are: AMAZING. Probably the best meal I've had in my life. Great customer service, superb food, fantastic attention to detail. For a 1 michelin star restaurant, the quantity/portions of food was actually very good. No one bite samplers/appie sized entrees here. They kicked off the meal with two amuse bouches and gave a palate cleanser before dessert plus so chocolates and caramels after dessert. I did the 5 course tasting menu and my husband did the 4 course. Everything from top to bottom was delicious. You cannot go wrong with any of the dishes here! Standouts were the snails with bone marrows tantin, the dungeness crab and the squall and squab duo (something that has been on the menu forever apparently). If you love truffle, the Triple-T Ranch Tempura Duck Egg will be your jam! My husband ordered the Pickled Heirloom Beets and we were even impressed with that (the simple things are hardest sometimes). The flavour profiles were so deep and surprising; who knew beets could taste like that. In terms of dessert, the cheese soufflé dessert was amazing and creamy. Just beautifully executed and unique. Also loved the Blackberry Baked Alaska. Beautiful texture and flavour contrasting each other, especially with the lemon cake/berry combo. Chef also came out and talked to everyone during the meal and our waiter was fantastic. We were seriously stuff by the time we left. Best meal in San Fran!

The best restaurant in SF... the food is amazing, great atmosphere, slightly expensive but well worth it! You will not find a better French restaurant outside of France.

The “whole French experience is yours” at Roland Passot’s "special-occasion" Gallic boîte in Russian Hill where a “luxurious atmosphere” and “incredible” service set the stage for three-hour, "knock-your-socks-off" tasting menus – with each course seemingly “more skillfully prepared than the prior” – paired with a premier wine list; oui, it's "expensive”, but perfect for “la foodie”, especially when le chef “comes out of the kitchen to mingle with diners”; P.S. the adjacent lounge serves a late-night bar menu. Learn more about La Folie. What to order Tasting menus only (pictured) Insider tip: Neighboring La Folie Lounge is a relaxed yet still chic way to sample bites like gougères and lobster croque monsieur.

THANK YOU papa & mama from kentucky for treating us to such a special dinner at la folie! i think my experience at la folie would've been a solid 5 star experience had it not been the table we were assigned. upon entering the restaurant i thought "nice ambiance, lighting" and then we were lead to a separate room at the back of the restaurant which was decorated very new orleans masquerade-like (think royal purple and kelly green). then we sat at a table that was RIGHT next to the kitchen door (talk about constant distraction). really unexpected for a michelin star restaurant. solid food, but terrible experience for anything other than food. half way through our meal as more and more guests arrived in the dining room it got warmer and warmer, at one point i felt like i was eating in a sauna. unfortunately the delicious scallop, salmon roe (SO GOOD), and cod couldn't make up for the terrible seating arrangement and ambiance of la folie :( so if you're looking to improve your dining experience, personally request a table that's in the main room that's away from the kitchen.

This is one of those places you go once in a blue moon for a romantic birthday or anniversary celebration. You get 3 ($85), 4 ($95), or 5 ($105) course meal where you choose the dishes based on the category. You cannot get more than one dish from the poultry and meats section, however. They also have a seasonal prix fixe menu that is an additional $10 if you would like to supplement any of their dishes onto the regular menu; otherwise it's $115 for the seasonal. The service is exceptional here and they bring you little goodies in the beginning and after your meal. The chef even came to say hello! It's very pricey, but I did have three lobster dishes. Here is what I ordered: -butter poached lobster with ravioli (excellent; HUGE lobster and the sauce was amazing) -corn and lobster soup (excellent; creamy and delicious) -mushroom and lobster risotto (excellent; perfectly cooked and flavorful) -cod with anchovy sauce (I wasn't a fan; probably the anchovy sauce that I didn't like) -scallops (had this weird fishy taste again that I didn't like) -peach Melba baked Alaska (good; recommended by our waitress) -petit fours (little sweet bites at the end; good) I would recommend it for a special occasion but warn people that it's definitely an all night event; three hour dinner! When I do come back, I'll probably do a three course with mostly lobster. Yum!!
