Greens Restaurant

This restaurant offers a nice view of the marina and the bridge on a clear day, or a view of the fog on a not-so-clear one. The food is just awesome; it's one of those places where even carnivores like myself don't end up missing the meat. It is quite expensive though, so come prepared to burn through some cash. The portions could be a bit larger for the money, but still leave you plenty satisfied.
I know most people think Greens' heyday was 20 years ago, but I disagree. After having their sublime 4-course prix fixe this past Saturday, I think they're just hitting their stride now. I'm not a vegetarian, but rather a militant omnivore, and never before have I had a 100% vegetarian meal that made me think I could actually handle that as a life choice. Everything we had was filling, beautiful, and most of all delicious. From the incredible tagine and pumpkin soup, to the tartlets and risotto ... it was all perfect. Three of us shared everything, and I walked out totally stuffed - for $50 per! Certainly not cheap, but not expensive given the view, service and food. I'll definitely go back!
Greens was an ok Vegetarian restaurant. Location is great, if you can get a reservation near sunset. The service was good as well. As far as the food, it was ok. We had the moroccan soup, Brochettes and Shepard's Pie. The soup was not bad, had a good flavor. The brochettes came highly recommended, sauce was good but I thought the dish was kind of bland. I think it doesn't have any fault to do with the preparation but probably because it's simply skewered tofu. My expectations were higher due to other high rated vegetarian restaurants like Gracias Madre, which I really enjoyed. Overall I think the food was a bit over-priced.
“You can taste the Zen” marvel fans of this “vegetarian institution” in the Marina that transforms “fresh-from-the-garden” produce from the Zen Center’s Green Gulch Farm into “outrageously good”, elegantly plated meals that even “satisfy the pickiest meat eaters”; an “innovative” wine list and “friendly” service in a “serene” setting with “polished wood” and “magnificent” “views overlooking the Golden Gate” seal its status a “consistent winner.” Learn more about Greens Restaurant. I was really disappointed by Greens. I'm a vegetarian, so I always get really excited when I go out to a vegetarian restaurant -- both because there's more selection and because typically vegetarian chefs do a better job at making vegetarian dishes. Not so at Greens. I came here with my boyfriend and a (vegan) friend visiting from out of town. I ordered a layered vegetable and cheese gratin which was generally pretty bland, and my boyfriend got the mushroom pasta which was also shockingly bland and in a watery sauce. My friend's comment was that she liked her food because she likes bland things. I bet there are better dishes on the menu, but I came in with high expectations and was disappointed.
