Steinkeller

They serve liters of Ayinger Jahrhundert from the tap. This alone makes it a treasure.
We drove down from Dayton just to try this place out. We had high hopes. The menu looked great. But our disappointment started when we discovered that contrary to their online menu, they do not have veil schnitzel. Only pork or chicken. We went ahead and ordered the pork Yeager Schnitzel. Anyone familiar with German food will be disappointed. I felt like I was eating shake and bake. And the spaetzle seemed like it came from a box. We have Amber Rose down the road, and Schmidt's in Columbus. Stick to those for real German food. It also didn't help to have a bunch of loudmouth Greek-ish kids gabbing as loud as they could the whole time. The only thing good was the beer, and I had to remind our waiter to bring be the beer I'd ordered. Overall, a major disappointment.
I recently moved back to Oxford, and re-visited Steinkeller. They have a new menu, and I loved the selection. I've had the Veggie Club - the shallots and pesto were really great additions. I also have had the Schnitzel Strips; the dipping sauce that comes with them was amazing! Alongside all of the beer choices, I think that Steins is a great place to grab some pub food and hang with friends!
I would say that Steinkeller tries to make their food rise above the standard pub thoroughfare, however they simply fall flat trying. If I were to recommend something for their kitchen it would be to do simple things well, rather than trying to make complex dishes with frozen, purchased Sysco-ish ingredients. I then proceeded to order my dinner, which the appetizer came out cold and the bartender input the wrong entree. When he went to correct it, the kitchen prepared the meat for the entree that I ordered, however it was still cold on the inside of the meat, indicating they just whipped it out of the freezer and nuked the damn thing. How very, incredibly disappointing. I would rather have a decent burger and some decent fries than try to have a non-standard pub dinner that is poorly done. Here's a tip, microwave your food a little longer so it's not luke warm or cold when it's served.
I have to say that this is my favorite place to grab a mug of brew in Oxford, Ohio. Having graduated from Miami University, I do return to the town every once in awhile, and I don't feel at home at most of the places uptown any longer. Steinkeller is always a treat, however.
