JvG is the best place for a cup of coffee in the neighborhood. They have a fantastic rotation of drip coffee so you can expect something a bit different each day. They roast their coffee nearby in Hillsborough, which assures your coffee is fresh and tastes great. If you don't like their coffee of the day selection, you can choose from a variety of fresh pour-over options that they'll make to order, just be sure to leave a few extra minutes for them to prepare it. Their espresso drinks are fairly standard, but delicious. While, I've never had them, there are a few interesting coffee choices on the menu, such as a cold nitrogenated coffee from the tap that pours almost like a Guiness. While you're here choose from an assortment of Durham made baked goods that are brought in fresh each morning or scoop a pound of coffee for the week from the bins by the door. Enjoy your food/drink inside if there's room (the interior only holds about 25-30 people comfortably) and take in the featured local artwork, or sit out front during the warmer weather. Fun Fact: JvG has a "take a book, leave a book" bookshelf for their customers to enjoy!
The coffee may be OK but this place wins the award for the worst espresso in Durham. I've had espresso there 3 times during the last year - given the other reviews I thought I must have just hit an untrained barista or bad pull the first time or two, but all three resembled fermented battery acid rather than a well-pulled shot. I hate to give up on a local coffee shop, but even Starbucks beats this place hands down when it comes to the drink of the gods.
If you like really slow service, no place to sit and unreliable wi-fi - this is the place for you.
Absolutely fabulous cappuccino! Nice and friendly (What a combo) staff!! Side by side seating like an European spot. ..Happy!
Great place to grab a cup of Joe. Knowledgeable staff. I have only had the drip coffee but it is really good. $1.30 if you bring your own cup.
