Twice now I have special-ordered gluten-free birthday cakes and both times they've been a huge hit. The cakes were beautiful and delicious (and no one noticed that they were gluten-free). The cupcakes are also fantastic. It's definitely not a cheap option, but--as gluten-free goes--you were going to spend more anyhow. It might as well taste great, look good, and be ready on time.
I just had my first experience with DaisyCakes yesterday, and I was very pleased. The service I received was above and beyond. I went in looking for gluten free cupcakes for my brother's birthday, and after finally making my mind up on what I wanted, the woman helping me offered to add a special birthday touch to the cupcakes that made them look even more amazing. These cupcakes looked stunning, and I knew that my brother was going to be surprised and think I went way out of my way to find these cupcakes. In the back of my mind when I think gluten-free, I think bland and boring, and I was totally prepared in the taste arena to suffer the same with these cupcakes even though they looked amazing. Words can not describe how wrong I was. The cake was rich and decadent, and the icing was creamy and balanced with just the right amount of sweet. Even though my brother who can't have gluten, was so touched and impressesd with these cupcakes, my husband and daughter are already asking when I am going to bring home more!
It was ok, my vanilla cupcake was dry and it tasted like a shortbread. The icing is bland.
Great little lunch spot. Not as much seating or as many menu choices as some of the options around it, but high quality food and nice service. Their daily frittatas are always good if you're in the mood for something more brunchy, but if your headed for lunch try the turkey avocado sandwich - very yummy. Where they really shine, of course, are their deserts. Cookies, cakes, cupcakes - all delicious. I recently bought half a dozen cupcakes there for my mother's birthday (a selection of all their flavors - chocolate chocolate, black and white, red velvet, vanilla dream, pumpkin spice, etc) and everyone at the dinner raved about them. And if you give them 48 hours notice, they will do custom cakes in a variety of cake and icing flavors. Unique approach among bakeries in Durham. All in all, a great little spot.
Dasiy Cakes is a slice of heaven in downtown Durham. From the moment you walk in you know you will be pleased. My wife has a gluten-sensitivity and she was still able to have a delicious torte and cookies gluten-free! For me, the Counter Culture coffee and gingerbread scone were a one-two punch knockout. I wanted to buy 76 scones that day because it was so moist and the crystallized ginger was decadent. I recommend their sandwiches, pastries, coffee and gluten-free snacks for a moment of bliss in an otherwise dismal day.
