Heirloom Restaurant

It wasn't awful, but I left hungry. This is one of those places that hipster "foodies" keep telling me is SOOOO good, but I was not impressed. I ordered fish and chips, and the portions were so small that I took one look at the plate and knew I'd still be hungry afterward. It tasted fine, nothing I'd jump up and sing a song about, but I think even my 3-year-old son would still have been hungry afterward. The fries they brought were in a stainless steel cup that was roughly the size of a Dixie cup. For $14, I'd expect to at least be satisfied afterward.
I visited Heirloom for the first time last week and the food was amazing. I ordered a spinach salad and for an entree beef tenderloins. Both were amazing and the beef was probably the best I've ever had, cooked just right. The portions were large and while the meal was $$ I definitely enjoyed it.
I was in Lexington on business and decided to make the trip out to Midway to enjoy a nice dinner. The food was spectacular and the wait staff was great! I didn't think the food was overpriced at all because you get what you pay for. I had the spinach salad (which was large enough to fill me up) followed by the fava bean pasta dish (I can't remember the name). Both were excellent! And the Apple Crisp dessert was VERY good as well. I had a very pleasant meal here and would definitely go back.
I've never felt strongly enough about a restaurant to write a review. However, our experience at Heirloom was one for the ages. The waitress could not get her act together. Some people in our group never got their salads, I got the wrong soup, and there was an hour delay in between when she brought us the first course and the second course. The food was subpar, too - my chicken was pink in the middle and my husband's "warm spinach salad" tasted totally cooked (not just heated). The kicker was that she never gave us an actual check, just came over and demanded credit cards so she could go behind closed doors and "split" the bill. My husband & I weren't drinking while the rest of our table was ordering very expensive bottles of wine, so the group told her to make sure she charged less money to our credit card. She claimed the computer "couldn't do that," and charged us just as much as everyone else... I have never before encountered a restaurant computer that can't charge different amounts to different credit cards....clearly she was just lazy. I feel like they stole money from us.
The customer service was outstanding. I loved our server. She was so delightful and very knowledgable about pairing food and wine. However, the food itself was nothing special. We ordered the chicken livers and salads as an appetizer. While the sauce was good, we both thought the livers alone lacked a lot of flavor. The salads were ok. I had the ceasar and my date ordered the warm spinach. The caesar dressing could have used more flavor. Although, my date's spinach salad was pretty tasty. I ordered the halibut due to great reviews and was pretty bummed about the lack of flavor as well. I didn't taste the goat cheese in the goat cheese grits and the corn salsa tasted more like a pico de gallo from Applebee's at best. The fish was perfectly cooked and had a great crust from the pan searing. My date's duck was very good and well prepared. The asian sauces were delicious as were the egg rolls. Overall, I have to say that I have had a lot better. I guess this is as good as it gets in the state of KY.
