Giovanni's Fish Market

Super fresh & tasty Halibut Fish & chips, but we substituted onion rings + clam chowder, all wonderful. We loved the setting right by the dock with super sunset views! Go early they close at 6 and a large line had formed right after 5! We arrived at 4:45PM when the 75 degree beach day ended with the sun behind Morro Rock, but still shining brightly at Giovanni's! Was like 2 sunsets the same day!
Giovanni's is a landmark on the Morro Bay Embarcadero, and for good reason(s). I discovered Morro Bay's wharf a couple years ago, and from the start several locals mentioned this was a place to keep on my short list of quality stops. They were right. Every time I visit this place I smile, starting from the superb location, seemingly just a stone's throw away from Morro Rock and overlooking the fishing boats right below you. There's their super-clean fish market with an amazing array of fresh seafood (much of it locally caught). And of course, let's get to the point--the food experience has been consistently delicious. You get to relax with your food on their outdoor patio at the very edge of the water. This is a very cool spot to unwind and soak up the pleasing vibe of Morro Bay. On the food: You simply can't go wrong with their fish and chips, always fresh-tasting, and with a perfect light batter. Don't miss their garlic fries with grated parmesan cheese... Also, they've won local competitions with their clam chowder, so give it a try, even if you just get a cup to taste it. Finally, I'll mention something new to me that I discovered at Giovanni's, a very memorable Smoked Salmon spread that was devoured by my guests and must be revisited! They smoke their own fish on-site. There are so many items both in the market and at the restaurant window to explore. Bottom line, Giovanni's is like a touchstone for us when in Morro Bay. It's the whole experience: the location, their friendly workers, the amazing seafood market, and importantly, the flavors we look forward to. By the way, your whole group will enjoy standing by the railing at their entrance and watching sea lions that are often just 5 feet away. This is the coolest place, highly recommended. -JLAlvarez
Yesterday I bought $21.00 worth of crab claws to take on a picnic. The crab tasted old and I was very disappointed with the product. We ate a few claws and threw the rest away. BUMMER!
Thoroughly disappointed this last trip! We go every year. Every year for the last 8 years I have ordered their grilled chicken quesadilla. It is AMAZING! So amazing that I convinced my in-laws to get one this year. But this year, it may as well have been from McDonald's. They cut up breaded chicken strips, put in jack cheese and gave me a side of salsa in a cup! There was hardly any pieces of chicken strips in any of the 3 we ordered. They lacked flavor, the best part was the salsa in the cup! I was so embarrassed and felt very sorry for my in-laws, who usually order the fish and chips ever year. When I went to ask the kitchen crew why the change, they looked at me like I was crazy. Claimed they had not changed a thing and didn't know what I was talking about! I explained what it has always had in it and they disagreed with me and said it was never made that way. Really?! Then what have I consistently ordered/received for the last 8 years? They couldn't give me an answer, just shrugged at me shaking their heads. I am so disgusted. We paid $8 for 1 tortilla, 1 cut up chicken strip at the most, about 1 cup of Jack cheese and 3 TBS of salsa in a cup. The last 8 years it has had cut up fresh grilled chicken breast (Tons of it), jack cheese, salsa and cilantro IN the quesadilla and then grilled to crispy perfection. Plus, the little extra cup of salsa on the side. The quesadilla is usually so stuffed though, I can barely pick it up to dip it in the salsa! Maybe they ran out of fresh chicken breast, maybe they were cutting corners because it was so busy, but it was inexcusable for them to make me feel like I was out of my mind. Own up to changing the recipe if that's what you've done, that way I know to never order it again! Being dishonest causes you to lose faithful customers.
I recently received two shipment's from Giovanni's. One took over a week to get to my house and the smell of spoiled fish was overwhelming. On the second shipment all of the ice in the container had melted and the fish was room temperature. I called the company and struggled to talk to a manager. Upon a recent conversation Giovanni's blamed UPS but to there credit did issue a refund. In regards to the owner reply below it should be noted that I called Giovanni's multiple times. On my first call after receipt of the initial shipment I was told that a manager would call me back as soon as possible. After waiting two days for a mangers call I decided to try again and this time was able to talk to the shipping manager. During that call we agreed on a second shipment. On receipt of the second shipment I called Giovanni's again and was told that I would receive a call from both the shipping manager and either the owner or the store manager. The shipping manager did call and which point frustrated with his placing the blame on UPS I requested a refund. I am still awaiting a call from either the owner or the store manager. I also fail to see how UPS should be held responsible for the delayed shipment. When I reviewed the tracking instructions for the shipments i noted that both were sent ground not next day. Perhaps, I am incorrect but this infers that Giovanni's is saving money and gambling that ground will get the shipment to customers the next day instead of paying for next day delivery which they advertise on their website.
