South End Kitchen

Had lunch on weekday just after noon. Somewhat tight parking, but we were lucky and got the last remaining spot. Very nice building and decor. Short menu, but that can be a good thing. Tried the doughnut of the day and it was incredible. Friends ordered chicken salad and the flatbread and I tried the "SEK" burger. I was surprised when they brought out each dish as soon as it was done despite us being one order, so one friend had his food 5 minutes before the other, and my food took another 15 minutes. That led to an awkward dining experience. It's probably important to note that they weren't that busy and that when they realized how late my food was they offered me a brownie to thank me for being patient. The brownie itself didn't matter, but the positive attitude behind giving it did matter. The staff was very friendly. The chicken salad looked good, but small. The flatbread was also very small. Both dishes looked very fresh. My burger was very late and also small. I'm not sure why they call it a "SEK" burger since it was like any other good-enough hamburger; nothing special about it. The side of smashed potatoes (which I confirmed was what they gave me) looked more like friend potato chunks. Honestly I think they gave me the "fries" and the staff just didn't know what they were giving me. I may be wrong. Either way there was less than a small handful on the plate. Underscoring all of this though were the prices. My burger, with its small size, very small side, and lack of any sign of being remarkable, cost $14 because I added cheese. It's $3 to add bacon. That's potentially $17 for a burger that's "meh" in flavor. At that price point you would think you would get small touches like individual onion rings/slices, not a densely packed cross section of an onion including the core. The way I see it, for half the cost you can walk less than 100ft for fresh food in larger portions at another locally owned place. It's just hard to justify returning, but I hope they make it work.

Today is my birthday, we had a party of 6, including my 2 kids (4) and (7). The space, the environment, the fire, the donuts, the chocolate chip pancakes, the bisquits and gravy, the salmon and bagel....I could go on, ALL was soo terrific!! then we walked over to Lake Champlain chocolate and had MORE to eat. A perfect birthday!! Totally recommend this place!!!!
