The Grille at Rough Hollow
Reviews
Great food, service, and atmosphere. I have been here many times and always had great service. I recommend visiting on their special nights such as Prime Rib nights or weekends when the Chef introduces a new special. The food is grown locally and organic with some of it grown right outside in their own yard. They have a great wine selection that changes to introduce a new selection of great choices.
I am so sad to be writing this review. We have been going to Rough Hallow Grille for years now and have always loved it. We've even held events at the Grille of 40 plus people and everyone used to look forward to coming there. Our last 4 visits have really changed our view of this restaurant. I feel as though everything that was excellent on the menu has been removed (Ahi Tuna, French Dip (called something else but you get the idea) Snapper, Margarita Chicken etc). We keep going back hoping that maybe we hit a "bad night" but sadly it just keeps tanking. Last visit we stuck with hamburgers because those have always been pretty good. We stayed away from anything "fancy" because on Fathers day we ate their and ordered their steaks, they were not good. Low quality little flavor. Even the burgers are starting to slack. The service we received from our waiter was terrible. Took 45 minutes after our appetizer order to be informed they no longer had what we ordered. It took 1 hour and 15 mins to actually receive the burgers we all ordered. The waiter was extremely rude and pretty much blew us off when we complained. There was barely anyone in the restaurant. Really really disappointed. They used to be great, now for whatever reason it feels as though they are cutting corners, using low quality food and not teaching their staff how to be professional. Please Rough Hallow Grille step it up we want our amazing restaurant back.
One of my favorite secrets in Austin. If you enjoy resort style dining (fantastic NY Strip by the way) and want to take in the hills and glory of the Lake Travis communities, Grille at Rough Hollow is one of your best bets. I always thought this was a private establishment for the yacht club, but I'm so glad it's not!
The worst of memory for at least 5-10 years. We got seated, then got water from a bus boy. Then after 30 minutes I had to get up and ask one of the pink shirt mgr type staff (who was gawking at a bus boy set a table) if we might please get a server. 5 more minutes a kid showed up and takes our drink order. Another 15 minutes later he finally shows up with drinks (we've now been seated for more than 45 minutes before we even get a drink - ok, now he's walking off without asking what we want next so I figure grab him, better put in the dinner order now or it may be another 20 minutes. So I say hey guy how about our order? He says just a minute, does some other stuff and then finally takes the order. And we also said please bring some bread!! (the bread NEVER showed by the way) No kidding now, this really happened - we ordered appetizers to be followed by salads, and then main course. wait wait wait then, 30 minutes later we had the entire order arrive at once - they actually dumped the whole thing - one of the 2 appetizers (where's the shrimp, they forgot that) 2 salads and 4 main courses ALL AT ONCE. It hardly fit on the table and the waiter says SORRY I forgot the shrimp, sorry the kitchen put it all up at once and sorry about everything - if all at once then why was the hot mushroom appetizer stone cold?? AND it gets worse - my very expensive Rib-Eye is not only rare (I ordered MR) but it is tough and low-grade, with fat and sinew that can't be cut running right thru the middle. It's also cold - hmmm wonder why? At these prices I expect a lot. If I had not been with dear friends that I did not want to embarrass; I would have refused to pay the check and loved the opportunity to make a very public display of my thoughts with the manager who would have tried to tell me I owed him money for ruining our event. If you want to roll the dice (i.e. other reviews) go for it but I told the managers NEVER NEVER AGAIN!!!
I'm sorry to say The Grille went from wonderful to not so great. Since the change in chef and the allowance the owners gave him to work with, the quality is just not there. Fried chicken (ready made and previously frozen out of the bag), if I want fried okra I will go to a soul food place, not The Grille. We used to go there once or twice a week, now we don't go at all. When you consider it's surroundings, a poor choice was made. People who frequent this place won't care if they pay $5 more per plate to cover outlay. To cut quality in the menu was a big mistake. I am so sad I won't have this place to go to anymore. In addition all the wonderful wait staff is gone, too.
