Champs Sports Grill
Reviews
Judging from other reviews, people seem to forget that this is a sports bar in a college town You go here to hang out casually with friends, have some sandwiches or burgers and nibbles and beer, chat and maybe watch a game. From that perspective, Champs is spot on perfect. They have a good selection of gourmet sandwiches (the portobello and brie is a fave of mine) and a great ever-changing selection of microbrews. The servers are super friendly, patient and nice. Service can be quick if you let them know you're just stopping in, or they'll let you chill out and hang at a table for a really long time if desired. There is tons of room and free parking. I'm a fan! One of my fave places in State College.
It's a great place to meet your friends and watch the game. Food is a tad pricey, but experience should make up for it. Or you can play along on the many activities that are available to those who join in on the fun. Trivia Tuesday seems to be the favorite around the place. The staff can't handle when the place gets populated but hey, what can you expect from a full house.
Wings were excellent, cobb salad was just okay, mac and cheese was excellent and creme brulee was great. Price was okay. Overall was very good.
Food sucks and the male bartender with a long ponytail was a d--k. This is possibly the worst chain in America.
I don't know why so many of the sports bars around here have such poor food, but Champs is no exception. After a disappointing experience at the American Ale House and Grill, I hoped Champs would be better. I was wrong. One positive thing Champs has going for it is the atmosphere. The restaurant is clean and contains many large screen TVs around the bar. Waiters and waitresses are dressed professionally and are friendly. The decor is well maintained and there are many Penn State artifacts adorning the walls. Well-known Penn Staters in the sports scene often show up, such as Mike McQuery, who was eating in the next booth when I was here. Unfortunately, the atmosphere is not matched by the service or food quality. The menu is large and every time I've gone here I hoped to find something that I like, but I am always disappointed. And while order accuracy is fine, service is extremely slow. Expect to be here for two hours or more. That's fine if you plan to watch an entire game, but not if you just want to eat dinner.
