Trip down memory lane hits speed bump. I took my 90 year old Grandpa there, he talked of the old days and how neat it was to eat at the colony inn. We arrived at 1 pm and after it taking 15 mins just to get the drinks I grabbed the waited and said we were ready to order. We ordered 2 rib eyes medium. $25.00 each. Service was terrible. Steaks were rare in the middle and thin as can be. It was like eating jerky. Didn't get any refills on food. And when I got up to pay the waiter was hanging out with his girlfriend and the other waitress was hiding in the other room. Just Terrible and ruin something that should have been special for my grandpa and I. I never give a bad review but this was so bad it will be a story told for years.
Today, because it is my birthday, my companion and I drove almost 100 miles to have lunch at the Colony Inn Restaurant in Amana, IA. This has always been our favorite restaurant and we do it several times each year. Today was the worst experience I have every had, not only in this restaurant, but any restaurant. Al always we both ordered Swiss Steak. We had to wait quite a long time for our food, and when our waitress brought our food I said that was not Swiss Steak as I have ever eaten, but she informed me the reason it was grey and had no gravy was because it was fresh. She said the only time it had gravy was if it had been setting in a pan for a long time. The meat was very dry and stringy. I also asked for mashed potatoes which has always been served with our meal but she said they ran out and we would have to eat fried potatoes that were burned on the outside and raw on the inside. At that she stomped off. My companion needed a refill on his drink but she never came back to the table. A young man that was also waiting tables finally ask if the food was good and if we needed anything and I told him the food was not good and we would like another drink. He was very nice and got the drink. If our waitress had given me the chance I would not have accepted the food that was served and would have ordered something else but she would not allow that. We sat for a long time and finally she came to our table. At that point we just wanted to pay our bill and leave. She asked how the food was and I said "not good". She exploded and told us we did not need to pay for the food just get out of the restaurant. We were both stunned as were all of the other customers in the restaurant, and there were quite a few. We got up and walked toward the door and she came up behind me as if to attack and I told her she has a bad attitude. She then exploded and told us if we didn't "GET OUT" she was going to call the police. And Happy Birthday to you too!!! I don't know this woman's name, but we were there on July 3, 2014 between 1:30pm and 2pm.
I have eaten here on a couple occasions, and everything was fantastic. The staff was very helpful and engaging. The good was amazing. Did I mention the staff?
My husband and I have eaten with Walt's family for years and years. Since the brick house closed, we believe the family is now running the Colony Inn. We arrived on a Friday, without reservations with a party of 7 and were soon joined by 8 more people. The Colony folks accomodated the balance of our group at a large table in another room. I can only speak for me and my husband, but our food was very, very good. It was not haute cuisine, nor is this a steak house, but for German or Penn Dutch type food served at reasonable prices, the Colony Inn can't be beat. We enjoyed deep fried shrimp and pot roast of beef. We each had a beer (made in Amana) and both ate dessert. I grew up w/ a Penn. Dutch grandma and my husband is German. The food was good!
Very good food good service family style food.
