Boudreaux's Cajun Grill
Reviews
Let me start off by saying that to me cajun food is flavorful, well seasoned, and has a little spice to it. I LOVE cajun food. So when I saw Boudreaux's, I was thrilled!! I was looking forward to tasting some of their "authentic" dishes. Boy was I ever disappointed. I started off ordering a scampi dish from the menu that the server informed me they no longer served. I then ordered a cup of crab bisque to get me started while I weighed my options. Then the "crab bisque" came out. This was by far the worst thing I have ever tasted in my life. It had very little crab meat if any, tons of baby spinach(never heard of putting spinach in a crab bisque), and it tasted like sour milk. My dedustion is they boiled the bisque and the cream curdled or it got left out the night before. I would say it was like a sour creamed spinach soup. Disgusting at best, From the descriptions most everything sounded great. I settled on a the Mardi Gras pasta. I elected to omit the peppers and onion and add shrimp. The "chef" told the server this would make it lose a lot of flavor. I had no idea that meant ALL of the flavor. This dish was tasteless and very very bland. I asked for some cajun seasoning to add to it to bring a little flavor, unfortunately I would have had to add 1/4 of the shaker to get any. During the first part of our meal, I heard a man who said he was the owner speaking to the other table there. He sounded excited to see them and kept bringing them alcoholic beverages. Even after I told our server about the sour soup, I never saw the owner. I would say this restaurant is very poorly managed and the food is terrible and not at all cajun. Suffice it to say, I will NOT be going back.
Visit was Jan 7th, 2015 5 pm. We sat in main dining room, right side facing window and deck. Great service, great food. We had the cajun brushetta and Boodan balls for appetizers. Both very good. Servings are very generous. Then gumbo, very good and rich, spicy but not too much. After this we were completely satisfied but had already ordered entree. The crawfish etoufee (sp?) was great. We are not cajun raised but we enjoyed all the food. Wine was only $3/ glass. One of the best views of Mobie Bay out large windows and very nice covered deck with firepits. It was really cold that night so we did not go outside. This is a great place to watch the sunset. Server was very attentive and brought us take home box. She took plates and packed them in kitchen. When we got home we realized that she labeled what the dish was, restaurant name and date. Crawfish etoufee was good warmed up. We both recommend Boudreaux's.
okay, here's the deal, its hit and miss meaning its not bad but you have to get specific items to get "good" especially if you are familiar with and expecting real NOLA style food. gumbo was good though very light on shrimp, crawfish etouffee good. however - pressed poboy a disaster. We had the shrimp and oyster poboy which is pressed like a panini instead of a NOLA style poboy. hardly any shrimp or oyster on it - did i say hardly? if you are used to NOLA style you know the term over stuffed poboy on NOLA style french bread - consider this nothing like that - avoid at all cost. this is sooooo far from the style of poboy you would get at any restaurant with a Cajun name in NOLA. Do not and i mean do not get the pressed poboy. stick with crawfish etouffee instead. Because the name is Cajun doesn't mean the food is. I do not intend to eat again. when told the waitress didn't like the press, she acted like she could care less.
I recently made a stop at Boudreaux's for lunch. Since the lunch menu was very pricey I ordered the Eggplant Medallions, boy were they nasty. The Mgr. saw that I was picking at them and asked If I wanted something else, I told her they were terrible. I then mentioned that I heard the people at the table behind me being offered the Blackened Redfish which was not on the menu. I told her that sounded great and ordered it not asking or being told what the price was. I eat out for lunch everyday so I am familiar with Seafood prices in the area. They grilled/blackened redfish tasted like it was grilled in old cooking oil and the crawfish topping was not even prepared in a sauce, no flavor! The price for this was $24?? I can get the same thing prepared by a local chef for less than half of what I paid for that and it is delicious. This restaurant location has changed ownership several times in recent years and as far as I can tell it is for the same reason, food not prepared by a professional chef and over charging.
