Probably the most decent place in Freo of all the places to survive. It's come a long way. The crowd is pretty young but there's no "rough c****". Best to get there early when the more beautiful women are there. The vibe starts to turn south after 12pm when it's starts winding down.
If ypur over 40 they say ypur type aint welcome here! And i drank there 4 20 years

I went looking specifically for a pub that played live acoustic music that one does not need to shout over, with a friendly atmosphere and character. We found it at the Newport. Everyone was friendly and it had a pioneering type feel to it. The acoustic singer / guitarist was very talented and an ideal compliment to our conversation. We met several friendly locals in the course of that one drink, being a testament to the atmosphere. This was at 3pm however, and I imagine on a Saturday night the atmosphere would be markedly different. Still, Newport will be visited again should we return to Fremantle.
