Devils Backbone Brewing Company

March 7th was our second trip to DB anticipating another great meal with superb beer. The beer remains great but the food was a total disappointment. The waiter said there is a new Chef. The menu was a small "place mat" menu. My wife's salad had so much vinegar she could not eat it and her $27 steak was tough and maybe an 1/2 inch thick. My rating is based on the food not the beer.
Great spot for food and beers if you are in the Wintergreen area. The place is huge, but has a comfortable, casual feel to it. This was our last stop on our 10-person beer tour, and our waiter did an excellent job of handling our large, rowdy, and slightly tipsy group. We all tried some great beers and ate some delicious, greasy food - highly recommend the nachos with pulled pork and jalapenos. Splitting the check was a breeze too, which was great.
The view, building, decoration and beer are all great. The service was poor at best from the "greeter/hostess", bar tenders and manager. Our server was pretty good but I noticed most servers looked unhappy and hurried. The food was way overpriced and ranked as ok. Portions were small. They need to expand bar area and outdoor seating as it was very crowded. Obvious that management and or owners don't care about quality, just raking it in from the tourists.
My wife and I went to Devil's Backbone on a recommendation of a friend. It was very disappointing. We were given a pager and told the wait would be about 35 minutes. We waited in the lobby. From where we stood we could see several empty tables in need of clearing, but the staff seemed to be in no hurry to do so. After a substantial wait we noticed the lobby area had cleared, yet we had not been paged. Finally a receptionist asked what our pager number was, and after finding the pager number in her book she said that we were "MIA" because a page had been sent about fifteen minutes prior. I showed her the dark and silent pager which had never left my hand. She got us a table. After ordering we had a very long wait for the food, which was just okay. We were never told of the availability of the beer sampler. I queried the waitress about the sampler after seeing other customers with them. She said it wasn't mentioned in the menu and we "had to ask". (How would someone know they had to ask for something they didn't know existed?) She gave us a sampler menu and said she would be right back, but it was about 10 minutes before she returned. After ordering the sampler it was about a 15-20 minute wait for it to arrive, by which time we were already finished with the food. After finishing the sampler we had to wait again another 10 minutes for her to return so we could request the check. The environment was extremely noisy and drafty. The music playing was not good sound quality. It sounded tinny. Either DB was very short-staffed, or they are inattentive. We will not be returning to this brewery.
Great food. Lot's of good beer, some great seasonal beers, nice staff.
