Saturday evening my wife and I decided to enjoy a nite out at Hemmingway's, a big mistake.....They had only two people plus the guitar player and the cook in the whole place. The two waitresses were the host and bartender and busser. None of the candle lights were lit on the tables and there were two dirty tables next to ours the whole meal. Our server promptly dropped a beer bottle on our table due to not knowing the proper way to carry or serve from a tray so we were forced to move to another table. One of the two servers was wearing black and white tennis shoes and was serving dishes from her hands in a sloppy fashion instead from a tray. The food was somewhat overpriced but good quality and presentation. We noticed on the way home that Latitudes down the street seemed to be the place to be, the bar and restaurant was full and we intend to dine there the next evening out.
Our waitress was terrible. The had cuss words written in clear site on her order sheet. I was honestly a little afraid of her. For an upscale restaurant you would think they would hire more selectively -- or at least tell them not to write profanity for everyone to see.
My wife and I love going to Hemingway's. Dad recommended it and we've been several times. We've tried everything on the menu and our favorite meal is the Shrimp Wellington. Last time we were there, we got to meet the chef! The atmosphere very upscale. If you're looking for a special date night or a place to get away from the ridiculous crowds, Hemingway's is great. The huge fishtank adds to the atmosphere, it's one of the biggest I've seen in a restaurant. Service was great, food was great, it's worth it!
We had visited this establishment a few months ago for cocktails. This time around we came for lunch. I ordered a beer and it was not cold. I asked the waiter to please ice one for me when I order next. It came and still not cold. I ordered the Red Fish and the presentation was was great. The fish was dry and over cooked. At the end of our meal we ordered an apple type of dessert. It was absolutely terrible. I would recommend this place for cocktails and not for dining.
Just when you thought Hemmingway's might get it right, for the third or fourth time, sure enough, they shot their self in the foot again!! HIGH prices for average food and the service quality changes daily. This place might make it if the owner and exec chef figure out where they are, Rockport, Texas, not Manhattan. Sure, people love great food and service. That is, when they can get it at a price they can afford. The average income level in Rockport, Texas is a tad above min. wage! So, go for it all and do it well for all....or let me know when the auction starts. It's a great looking place! What a shame it has been mismanaged for so long!
