Monk's Cafe
Reviews
If you're looking for good food and service you won't find it at the Monk's Cafe. Our group of six is visiting Philadelphia found favorable reviews online so we decided to try it out. When we got there, we were told it would be a half hour wait. Time must move more slowly in the cafe as we waited outside for over an hour. But, we were determined to try to place that had earned hundreds of favorable reviews. When eventually got our table and ordered our food. I ordered the mussels and the duck confit. The fries that came with the mussels were stone cold. But, they brought me a fresh order a fries within a few minutes. The mussels came warm, but were quite bland-- the sauce was not well prepared-- which was disappointing considering they cost $15.95. As for the duck never made it to my plate because the waiter forgot to input my order. (But with how things were going that may have been for the best.) Rest assured, when we got the bill, I had nothing reduced from my order. TLDR; The Monk's Cafe includes specials such as poor service, cold fries and tasteless mussels while specializing in forgetting to input your order and doing nothing to remedy the problem.
Had my first pint of Russian River Pliny The Elder here on my birthday. Amazing mussels, pretty great wings, right and cozy space. The bottle selection of Belgian beers is astounding, my wife and I split one and then moved on to drafts. Great spot, will be back.
Russian River Damnation was served in a pint glass and Deschutes' Black Butte Porter in a small Pilsner glass. I looked around and saw many other beers being served in a standard pint glass (not even a nonic). Really enjoyed the ambiance of the small space and obviously the selection. With that being said, I had very high hopes for this place. I had to ask for a snifter so that I could pour my beer into it. And I was given weird looks for this. But no one in the restaurant seemed to care or bring it up.
Love this place for the great beer selection and food. Can get crowded and loud on wkds, but the friendly staff, crowd, and fine vittels make up for it.
One of my favorite places in Philly. An incredible beer selection, with beers from all around the world, in perfect combination with good food. I like the mussels with and the monk burger with blue cheese.
