The Smithville Inn
Reviews
One of my favorite places! The food and service is very good. So many seemingly romantic restaurants have awful wine! Smithville Inn has wine suitable for a wine snob at a good price. The scenery and the ducks waddling around make the setting idyllic. This is my go to place for a special occasion or anytime for that matter.
cannot believe that we actually paid to eat "some garbage"... the rest went down the garbage disposal.... we both had new york strip steak, one was cooked medium well, the other one was requested to be medium, however, was served almost rare. both steaks were sooooo tough we had to "saw" through them. (so it did not matter whether they were cooked medium well, or rare)!!!! the asparagus was burned so badly we could not even make out the "taste" of asparagus, it was just a burnt "something" taste. even the shredded leaks on top of the steaks were burned! the mashed potatoes were not creamy, instead, very, very stiff and tasteless. A DISGUSTING MEAL (if we can call it a meal)... i told the waiter that the steaks were tough, and he said he would have to tell them in the kitchen. at that point, a manager should have been sent to our table and we should have been compensated in some way, shape or form. since that did not happen, it indicates to me that the owners/managers do NOT care what they are serving their customers. going to smithville back in the 80's and 90's was a christmastime tradition. thought we could pick up that tradition again. NO SUCH THING WILL BE HAPPENING! to add insult to injury, there was no valet on duty the night we were there which was 12/30/2014. so, HISTORIC SMITHVILLE INN YOU HAVE LOST TWO CUSTOMERS. what a shame, it used to be excellent, and upscale. NOT ANYMORE.... so, we must say FAREWELL TO SMITHVILLE INN!!!!
The white curtains overlooking the lake, covered with plastic flowers, are reminiscent of my grandmother's house in Queens, NY. 1950's charm. I looked around me and I was the only person younger than 60. Most people looked to be about 75 or 80 years old, with walkers and wheelchairs neatly stacked against tableside walls. The music was muzak, playing 1950's classics without vocals - just instrumentals. I didn't recognize most of them but what I did recognize were some Sinatra tunes turned into rhythemless naptime music. I signalled for a waiter who finally arrived with a smile. She took my order: filet mignon, medium rare, with all the trimmings, and a glass of wine. After an extremely long wait (about 45 minutes) a limp salad arrived. The dressing was good but the salad looked sort of like it had been yesterday's leftovers. Finally, the steak and wine arrived. I couldn't cut the filet. I looked around and all the bueheads seemed to be enjoying themselves. I wanted to escape this depressing awful place. I looked out the window again and attempted to cut the meat. Finally, I managed to saw through a few pieces and it was bland - worse than supermarket meat. The waitress came over and asked how I was doing. I complained and showed her the filet mignon. She asked if I wanted to send it back for a new one? Well, I had already been in that stuffy dusty old atmosphere far too long, and I politely declined. She pushed - did I want to return it, it was clearly overcooked? And I said no, just give me the check please. The mashed potatoes were fresh and definitely had some garlic and bits of real potato in it, but were a bit salty. I took one last look at the 90 year olds at the next table, my eyes half-closed from the music, and left. I will never go back, EVER.
Food was spectacular and the service was excellent. Take a step back in time, dining at the Smithville Inn is an experience. I went here for lunch for 2 on a Wednesday afternoon the restaurant was not busy we were seated immediately, the staff is friendly and efficient, we ordered an appetizer, soup and entrees. The Calamari appetizer was good with 2 different dipping sauces, we had the French Onion soup and the corn chowder soup both were great. The food was impressive and worth the price. I would definitely dine here again.
We went here for Easter Dinner Absolutely loved the charms, the views, the food, the staff! Great food, reasonably priced. Excellent atmosphere! Loved our time spent here! ♥♥♥
