It is what it is! A seasonal vacation spot restaurant. Let's not get all zagat-snob over this little summertime go-to. I've lived in Austin, TX for 17 years now and have had some of the best Mexican food ever (and I'm not even talking about Tex-Mex). Having said that, I've been eating at Compañeros for over 30 years now since back when it was called Compadres. Its consistency over the years has been remarkable. The food... heheh... um, like I said, it's Minnesota lake country Mexican which is far better than any fast food Minnesota has to offer. C'mon guys. Sure it's a bit pricey for how it tastes, but the atmosphere is always fun and the wait staff's outfits are charming, to say the least. I better run. We're heading there right now. It's great to be back at the lake!

I don't know anyone who lives in this area or who visits Park Rapids on vacation who doesn't make a point to get to Companeros at least once a year. Having spent some time in the south eating real Mexican food I will concede that this is pretty much Minnesota Mexican, its not necessarily high in spice and can be a touch bland. However, I think because I'm from here, I still love it, I do, I admit, I love it. They're always packed and its the only place to get a good margarita. If you're visiting the north country you must make it a point to get to Comaneros (especially on A Taste of Dorset if you don't mind crowds, they close down the whole street and all of the restaurants in the entire town offer their best samples).

I have been going up to Park Rapids for years now and never tried Companeros Mexican Restaurant. Last weekend I was up in the area and had to check it out. The service was right on. The Margarita's my friends were having looked great. I had the Fish Taco's. My friends had the Chimichanga and the Enchiladas. The food was average, the decor was good. The place is huge, plus an outdoor deck to party on. I am glad we stopped because you have to stand in line on the weekends to get in. Try the Deep Fried Ice Cream, it's the bomb.

Just ate there again last night. Best hot salsa. Great food. Service is outstanding and Rick & Laura are the best. They run a quality establishment!
