J. Gilbert's Wood-Fired Steaks and Seafood
Reviews
I moved to KC about 8 months ago, and my co-workers said this was the place to visit. My niece and her husband came to town, so we made reservations and went. The visit was very mixed....service was a tad slow. The meal was a mixed review...steaks were cooked perfectly for all 3 of us, from MR to Well done...and were awesome. We all had combo's....maple shrimp was good, not outstanding. The lump crab cake had as much crab in it as my crab legs, they were the star of the meal. The crab legs were at BEST were luke warm, the butter was cold and tasteless. I did like that the legs were pre-cracked, however they were over cooked, luke warm and water ran out of them. Steaks were great, seafood not so much. Sides: all were good except for the bake potato's....ICE cold and we it took 3 TRIES to get a HOT baked pot? REALLY? Waiter wasn't much help, either. No manager came over to speak to us....really? Anyway the creamed corn was excellent - wish there was more of it, 3 bites it was gone....? It was hot and good, however literally 3 bites and it was gone. Overall experience - it was ok, not the as good as all the hype - way over priced for the service, quality and portion size. I do not have any problems paying for an excellent meal, however this was lightly above average and not worth the price we paid. Not sure I will go back, and not sure I would recommend it to friends. It was not the experience we were expecting. Not good, not bad....pretty average.
I had the Maple Plank Roasted Salmon and it was amazing. There was so much flavor in the fish. i have never been a huge salmon fan, but I wanted to try something new and I'm glad I did it was well worth it. Also, my date had the Seared Georges Bank Sea Scallops they did not disappoint. I would definitely recommend this place. Very nice setting as well.
Updated: After a recent visit, I'm downgrading this review from 5 stars to 3. Prices are up, but quality is down. The bread used to be superb, but they've changed vendors. One of our salads was frozen. The steak, which used to be the best in the city, was just OK. Dessert is still great. Service was good. ~ ~ ~ Previous review: I've been coming here for over a decade. Service is almost always good, and the food is consistently excellent. They've set the bar high. Every time I try a new place, I end up saying: "Damn! I could have spent the same amount of money at J Gilbert's." The setting is not exactly scenic (strip mall city!) but I won't order a steak anywhere else. I'm a vegetarian at heart, but J Gilbert's is where I break rank. Everything - bread, salad, potatoes - has flavor. (Hey, Kansas City restaurants, why is flavor Kryptonite to you?)
Was pretty excited to visit this place after the great reviews. Not to be negative but it was only ok at best. Meat was aged in a way to makes it almost taste rancid especially in areaswith high fat content. Service was below average (i had to asked for my server more than twice to fill my drink). Maybe a bad time (almost 10 pm) but expected more.
The staff was pleasant and quick. The prices seemed quite high for the portions. I did enjoy my KC strip steak but would probably not go back unless I had another email offer. I'm not opposed to paying for a steak, prices just seemed arbitrarily inflated for all menu items.
