Matteo's Public
Reviews
Excellent little pub. Can be noisy and a bit crowded, as it is a small, old building, but it's about what you'd expect for a pub. There's a small outside seating area that's nice in the summer. The food is very good, if a bit pricey. The service is friendly and generally attentive, although things can get slow when it gets busy. The owner is usually hanging around and is eager to please. My favorite dish is the Fish and Chips, which includes a couple pieces of very fresh fish, perfectly cooked to a nice crunch. My only complaint about the dish is that the portion size on the fish itself is a bit small for the price and the cost to add another piece is prohibitively high. The cheeseburger is also excellent. It comes with a "skirt" of cheddar, which basically means they cook the cheese onto the burger until it melts into a skirt and pools around. Overall, it's one of my favorite places in Nevada City.
Have been here multiple occasions, I will not hesitate to return, actually pretty soon! The food is just phenomenal, the service has always been friendly and efficient. Live music, and a fun, historic atmosphere, definitely one of my very favorite spots!
All around fantastic! My girlfriend and I visited Nevada city for our anniversary, and finding most other places were coincidently closed on Tuesday's, we opted for Matteo's Pub based on the smells and sounds coming from the place as we were strolling by. While we were looking for something fancy for our little celebration, it is a very casual place, it's one that would accommodate a fine formal gathering or just a few beers and a bite for any occasion. Everything was delightful, and most of all, a great value. Our servers were wonderful, in fact, everyone in the place was wonderful. There was a two piece bluegrass band playing on the patio, not too loud, just providing some great background music. The food was delicious, most organic and/or locally sourced, and especially a great creative mix of flavors. We hit every option, appetizers, a bottle of wine, entrees, and when our bill came, we were stunned that it was well under $100. Our experience there was great, and it was an exceptional value. We both wished there was a place like this in our hometown. I highly recommend this place not only for those looking for a casual yet delightful dining experience, but also to other restaurant owners looking for a model that truly pleases the customer. Thank you for providing such a great establishment!
Went to Mateos PubliC on Saturday night with my husband and groupon. It did not take long to be seated in the courtyard by the nice pregnant wait person. The subdued folk singer/guitar player was a nice diversion during the longer than normal wait for our pulled pork sandwich and veggie burger. My husband could not finish his flavor-lacking veggie burger. I could not finish my more spicy than barbeque flavored pulled pork. The sauce was unevenly distributed making some parts of the pork dryer than the rest and one big area with a big glob of sauce. There was some deep fried batter flakes on top, that I think were suppose to be onion ring pieces but there were no onions in them. The brick walkway/decking area cou really use a good power wash. When I went to tHe restroom I glanced into the dishwashing area and it did not look like a place you would want to clean your dishes, it looked like a place that needed to be cleaned before you cleaned the dishes. The whole young crew seemed to be working very hard they were definetly trying to do a good job. If you go do not sit inside, the greasy smoke smell is powerful. Sit outside, enjoy a drink, appetizer and the entertainment then go to a nice restaurant for your meal.
Great selection of regional beer on tap. Try the pulled pork - the sauce is awesome. The New York Steak was cooked to perfection with a popping, citrusy tang. Outdoor patio perfect for hot summer nights. These guys got my vote when Lance Armstrong blitzed the Tour de Nevada City and Matteo's opened two weeks early to sell beer in plastic cups.
