Compared to other Mexican restaurants the food is way overpriced. My cheese enchilada looked like it had been melted with Kraft cheese slices in a microwave. Go to Alejandros for more authentic and better quality of food! Service was not bad.

Best Tex Mexico around. Local "mexican" restaurants pale in comparison.

I was very impressed. I love mexican food and this really hit the spot. My boyfriend and I had a great time here on Friday!

We've since eaten at Abuelo's locations in several states and have yet to be disappointed by either the food or the service. The recipes reflect more traditional, authentic dishes from Mexico rather than traditional Tex-Mex (this is ironic as the chain originated in Lubbock, TX). They have several great appetizers, but we usually order the three Dip Sampler which has Chile con Queso, Queso Diablo (a spicy combination of traditional Mexican cheese and chili) and Avocado Cream (a guacamole based dip). For entrees it is hard to go wrong. My personal favorites are the Chile Rellenos or "The Grande", which has just about everything I'm craving as I don't get really good Mexican food often. The enchiladas are also a great choice. I especially like the incorporation of unusual quality ingredients like avocados and spinach in their recipes (e.g., Enchiladas De Cozumel are great guacamole enchiladas topped with seafood), as well as the variety of vegetarian dishes. Many of the side dishes are equally unique, such as the Espinaca (Spinach) Casserole or Abuelo’s signature Papas con Chile, a tasty combination of whipped red potatoes, four cheeses, red and green peppers, and sour cream. This location was clean and well maintained, the service was top notch and the prices were reasonable for what you get (i.e., there was enough food left over for another meal). Truly a great place to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of a busy day.

I order the fajitas, which are typically served with sides of beans, sour cream, cheese, pico de gallo, and flour tortillas. Because I can’t eat most of those things, I replace the tortillas with lettuce wraps, the sour cream and cheese with guacamole, and the beans & pico de gallo with a side salad. It’s perfect! The salad is one of the best side salads you can find at a restaurant. Instead of it being a sad combination of lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese, this salad includes unique items like jicama, radish, and pieces of red bell pepper. You can also use one of their delicious salsas instead of salad dressing – I recommend the green salsa with pineapple and tomatillo. However, the fajitas are determined not to be outdone by the salad. The chicken is wonderfully tender and juicy and has a good blend of spices. The onions and peppers are continuing to cook in the skillet when the dish is served, allowing them to caramelize as you stir them around and mix the ingredients together. And the idea of using a lettuce wrap instead of a tortilla is an extremely healthy concept that still tastes great. The lettuce holds up well with juices of the fajitas, salsa, and guacamole, and it allows those to be the primary flavors you taste with each bite. The portion is big enough to where I make four different little “tacos” with all my ingredients. It’s healthy, filling, and delicious. Some people will continue to say Abuelo’s is too expensive for Mexican food. I think it’s worth it to pay a little bit more when the quality is this good. My lunch fajitas cost $11.00, which is $3.00 more than the lunch fajitas at Alejandros. But with the great service and excellent food I’ve had at Abuelo’s, I’ll have no problem paying the difference.
