My daughter lives in the area and took me on a local dive bar tour. This one was the best. Old piano along the wall, pot-bellied coal stove, manual bowling alley, bar stools that fold down. Very old and dingy inside, just what you would expect from a dive bar.
So so great.
A low-ceilinged railroad saloon with a screen door, pot-bellied stove, manual bowling alley, bar stools that fold down from under the bar and sign-in book with the signatures of Ronald Coleman, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. Huhn? No, you're not dreaming, this is Rohman's, and if you like bars, this is one of the all-time most memorable at which you will ever have the priviledge to bend and elbow, on par with McSorely's and then some. As far as I know there is no food beyond chips but food - and service - is really beyond the point. This place is all about atmosphere and swilling and pinching yourself later and to wonder if this really exists. If you want to know about those movie stars - or to bowl upstairs with the reticulated pin setter - you'll just have to visit and ask to see the sign-in book to learn the history of this marvelous cranky relic that is sure to burn down or be condemned and vanish forever any day now. Get there before it does.
