Farnsworth House Inn-Restaurant
Reviews
Even though the walk way to the bar feels like you're walking through a spiritual vortex, the food is amazing! I wish that they shared the same menu in the bar for the outside or had both. The service was great! Very good prices, too.
We arrived too early to check in to our room so we decided to get some lunch at the Sweney Tavern. I ordered the French Dip and my friend ordered the Bbq wings. Both were horrible! I asked for mayonaise and was given a foil packet. Gross! Unfortunately, we will never eat there again.
I absolutely love this inn! When I called to make my reservation, Tony was so helpful. He didn't make me feel rushed. Then when I checked in, he actually showed me some of the rooms that weren't occupied. It was so nice of him to take the time to do that. He explained how some objects are moved during the night, or there are knocking sounds. I don't think I believe in Ghosts, but at 3am I probably would, so I was too scared to stay in those rooms. I stayed in the Custer room, which is not of the main house. I read the reviews warning people not to do this and to only chose rooms in the main house, but I loved the Custer room! It was very quiet. This inn had so much character and 1800-feel, as if Daniel Boone was next door. I loved the little cafe just outside my hotel door, with walls of foliage. I loved the little black iron gate that opened to a narrow little brick path that swerved around a tiny goldfish pond and bushes and flowers. The cook a nice breakfast for you in the morning. They asked me if I wanted eggs, french toast, or pancakes, with fruit and potato fries. THe waitress was extremely nice. This inn was just about the nicest place I've stayed in! (and I'm not being paid to say this, I swear!)
When I saw the words, "Family Friendly" on the Sweney Tavern sign I thought this would be a great, convenient place to have dinner before our ghost tour at the Farnsworth House. Let me first say that our waitress was wonderful and the adult meals were good and reasonably priced...I asked if there was a children's menu and was told they still have one but it was taken off of the printed menu. The server told us the choices that all came with apple sauce, no fries. When we got our check, I was unpleasantly surprised that a child meal containing 3 chicken strips and a small cup of apple sauce was almost $10! I normally don't complain, but I just had to say something about this. If you are going to charge almost $10 for a small child meal, it should be listed on the menu! It felt as though the tavern takes the approach that it is okay b/c it is a tourist town without a high rate of repeat customers. Well, we are from Lancaster County and go to Gettysburg at least every couple of years, but will not be visiting the Sweney Tavern for dinner again.
the service was excellent! staff was friendly and attentive. beautiful building with a lot of history. i liked the garden area. my children enjoyed seeing all the items left by the cast members from the movie.i would recommend this place to anyone travelling there. i plan on going back in october and this place is on my to do list.
