We had a very poor experience at this diner tonight. We were in the area, and went based on all of the great reviews. We were asked to seat ourselves, and did so. Fifteen minutes later, we were still waiting for a server. No menus, no beverages, nothing. They did not seem to be terribly busy or understaffed. Finally, I went to the counter and requested menus. The owner was very kind and apologetic, and personally brought us our menus, rolls, flatware, and drinks. The waitress showed up shortly thereafter and took our orders. My husband ordered some kind of BBQ dinner, I ordered a Reuben, and the kids both got a short stack of pancakes. Over the next FORTY-FIVE minutes, several different servers checked on us to see if we needed anything. We kept replying "We're just waiting for our food". We were losing patience, and caught our waitress and asked her when our food was coming. She said she would check, but she wasn't very friendly or apologetic about the delay. We FINALLY got our food after just over an hour spent at the diner. That's right, pancakes, a sandwich, and BBQ took over an hour. The portions were large and the prices were great. The kids loved their pancakes. My husband, who is the patron saint of patience, took a few bites because he was starving, and pushed the plate away. He later told me that the BBQ tasted like jerky. My Reuben was inedible. The dressing was rancid, and the corned beef was in thick dog food chunks and insanely over-cooked. Tasted like survivor rations in a can. I scraped everything off my sandwich and ate the bread, which was good. The fries were very good. So, we were done eating in just a few minutes. Again, the waitress was missing in action. I saw her messing around organizing the butter spread and stuff in the cooler, and tried to flag her down without success. My husband took the kids to the car to watch a movie. While I waited. And waited. And waited. Finally, I had enough, and went and stood by the register to wait for our check. Another waitress produced it quite quickly. I paid, and, for the first time in my 42 year life, I left no tip. Tip amount, zero. I generally tip 15% for poor service, 20 for good, and 25 for excellent. The owner showed up again and said "I hope you didn't have to wait too long". What should one say to that? I didn't want to be mean, but we were there for one and a half hours for dishes that should take five minutes. So I said, "Well, *YOU* were very nice, thank you". The owner really is a doll and seems to care a lot about his customers. His problem is that he has a lazy and indifferent waitress on staff, and a chef (chefs?) who are just awful. The best part came a couple of hours later. We all started feeling a little queasy, and my seven year old son has been vomiting almost non-stop. I cannot say for sure that it was food poisoning: it might have just been too many pancakes in his little tummy, and, if so, that's our fault. But none of us feel well. I am posting this in the hopes that the owner can sort these issues out. Like I said, he seemed like a great guy who really cared. I think with the right changes, he has the heart to create a better restaurant with good service and good food". Post Script: We had to leave midway through our weekend vacation to come home and do laundry from all of the vomiting. My son has been unable to hold anything down for over 24 hours. The rest of the family is still unwell. Edited to add: They deleted the above review from their Facebook page. Which explains why they have such good reviews: they simply delete the bad ones.
