Mayflower Cafe
Reviews

I'll admit admit it, the Mayflower looks pretty dilapidated from the street, hell, you might think that when you step inside, but when you taste their food nothing else matters. Mayflower has the nostalgic feel of a restaurant that's been a part of the community for many years. The menu is not flashy and the waitresses remind me of my country cousins. I can tell you that the gumbo is pretty good and the redfish is unreal. The best fried oysters of my life happened at this restaurant and I certainly recommend you eat at this establishment. It's family friendly and everyone will leave happy.

Lisa was our server and she was excellent. I had the lunch special of chicken & dumplings. Dumplings were flat and dense, very good. Lacked large amounts of chicken but good flavor. Sides were greens and sweet potatoes, both excellent. Only disappointment was dinner roll and corn bread were not served warm enough. Decor is 50s 60s diner. Still has small lunch counter. Would like to try seafood next time. I think softshell crab would be a hit. Overall good food at a good price.

First, let me ask you not to pay attention to what Jenna N. commented. She can't even spell restaurant! Next let me express my credentials; I've traveled at least 30 of the continental states in my time and have dined at a multitude of restaurants. I'll tell you that the Mayflower gives a whole new meaning to the word NOSTALGIA! The building takes you way back when . . . I'll bet Jenna N. did not EVEN notice that the building was built on a slight angle to coincide with the city block! Although it seems to be plain, the architecture is astounding! Let me move on to why your reading this review. YES, the food was excellent!! My wife had the soft shell crab, I had the fried jumbo shrimp, my daughter had the sirloin steak and my future daughter-n-law had the chicken alfredo pasta. All four dinners were deliciously outstanding! I can't remember the last restaurant where they offered that wide of a variety! The waitress has a bubbly personality and the rest of the staff were very attentive and the prices were just right!

The Mayflower has been serving up its clients since 1936. It was renovated sometime in the 50s and hasn't changed one bit since then. To me that's charm. The servers are real people. I met no overbearing snobs, no pimple-faced teenagers or antisocial fools. The food looks unassuming and plain. The power is in the eating and it is powerful good. The portions are plentiful and your sweet tea won't go down an inch before it gets refilled. Like the main course the desserts are plain looking. No genach or shaved anything. But when you bite into that lemon ice box pie you'll be in heaven. The prices reflect the quality of food and service. I eat here as often as I can. If your experience is anything like mine you will have a full tummy, a happy palate, and a desire to return soon. Gotta go now, my dessert is here. :-)

Anybody who says that this place is too expensive obviously eats off the dollar menu at McDonalds. I eat here every time I'm in Jackson. I don't know another place anywhere that gives you 2 veal cutlets with sides and a salad for $15. If that's not a great value, I don't know what is. Stay at the Hilton Hotel for dinner and you're going to drop $40-$50 easy. And the food isn't any better than the Mayflower. I will keep going back.
