Excellent food and service! This place is a diamond in the rough. Best place to eat in Ottumwa.
Wandered in here tonight since I was staying next door. In a run-down hell-hole of a town with many Mexican restaurants to match the town, this one surprised me. The place was clean and the servers were extremely friendly, accommodating and fast! The food was mild, but fresh and good. They had authentic hot sauce at the table to spice it up. Quite the selection of beer too. I would suggest having a Mexican beer on tap though. It just makes sense and bottled beer is a little more expensive. I will definitely come here again before trying my luck elsewhere in town. Oh, I think this is called "Porto Garcia" now...or something similar....
Love the warm chips. Food very tasteful and good. Will continue to support this place by eating there.
We're from California and were visiting in Ottumwa for a few days in mid May. After about the 4th day we started getting hungry for some Mexican food and stumbled on to El Potro. Saved our lives. Clean, comfortable, friendly place with good service and really cold cerveza. Food was excellent ... as good or better than most places we've experienced in California. If you live in the region and like good Mexican fare, give this place a shot.
Pretty good, cross between authentic and Americanized Mexican food. Service varies from fair to good, always at least a C. Food about B- .
