Travaasa Hana
Reviews

We stayed at Travaasa Hana for one week and it went by so fast like a dream. The place was so peaceful and relaxing yet there were plenty of things to do for our three active high/middle schoolers. I am surprised that they don't advertise it enough but I recommend totally utilizing the resort's activity center. You can check out most of the gears and equipments such as snorkeling gears, boogie boards and bikes as well as activities such as pole fishings and net fishings on complementary. All of the guys at the activity center, Doug, Kepa and Lany were awesome and helpful. We usually don't want to visit the same places again, but we will definitely be going back soon.

The snapper (lehi), fish soup were tasty, but the portions are small. The macadamia nut ice cream was delicious. Call early to reserve a table overlooking the ocean, at a table next to the floor the ceiling windows. Live Hawaiian band and hula dancer on some nights provide a very relaxing atmosphere.

Any island I go to - it's here that I return... this is the true Hawiaan experience to me. It leaves the kitschy Hawaii far behind - this is a real tropical paradise. Service isn't bend over backwards, but these are real people from a real community full of connected families. The weather isn't perfect... but again.. it's the real Maui. Lush tropical forest with enough activities, beaches, hikes... it's the only place I ever feel "home", as odd as it sounds. It never disappoints, from the crashing ocean view with horses on rolling pastures, to the fun open mic nights at the grill..... one of the most stunning properties in the world far enough from the real world to forget yourself and reconnect with simplicity and calm... it's fairly amazing. And very special. Foot the bill for the Sea Ranch Cottages. I see you out there, trying to figure it out. Get the Sea Ranch Cottage (with a hot tub, if you can). It's worth the extra price... there's WAY more value in those rooms.

We started our experience in Travaasa Hotel Hana with the wrong foot when checking in. We had booked a prepaid plan but the hotel insisted in charging us extra fees: - 15% service fee over the face value (they had added it in small print) - extra $56 fee if there's a second person in the room Because we had booked via an internet 3rd party, the hotel didn't want to know anything about it. We asked to talk with the manager to try to reason with him and waive at least the second person fee (clause absent in our printed contract), but he gave us the cold shoulder. At that time all Hana hotels and B&Bs were booked because of a local event, and he knew they were our only alternative to sleeping in the car. What bothered me was the attitude of the staff and manager. They acknowledged that these hidden fees were a frequent problem but they would just raise their shoulders when we asked them to please change it for future guests. In short, I would expect the behavior they had from a 1,2 star hotel, but never from such an expensive and supposedly high class resort. After paying the extra fees, we walked to our houses only to find out that one of them was apart, and the other two had a wall in between (they could have at the very least let us know when we did the reservation, and we had time to change places). Beware of the room unusual configuration: no A/C, no TV (they use ceiling fans), no cell phone coverage, no internet in the rooms (only in the lobby), and the telephone is in the toilet (was the only one ringing when they called me from other room). Being a place close to nature, there has to be a problem with insects and they should know about. We found a dead cockroach in the morning next to our bathroom sink, my guess being that they somehow try to control the pests in the hotel without total success. My friends found a cane spider in their shower, so I guess finding bugs is normal there. Just be aware :) Besides all the above, the place was ok. But definitely too expensive for just a sleepover like it was our case.

We went for our honeymoon to Maui in July and drove straight to Hana from Kahului and stayed at the Travaasa for 3 nights. I am glad we went there first, it was beautiful, more secluded and ideal for couples... unlike the west coast (Lahaina, Kihei, etc) it had less of a commercial feel... we booked through a travel site and enjoyed our stay there... the staff were very courteous, the decor is kind of minimalistic but comfortable (no AC, TV or wifi) and their pool/hot tub facing the ocean is beautiful... Its very pricey though but well worth a couple of days stay... After our stay, we found that we were double charged for a BBQ dinner that we attended as well as there was an issue with regards to gratuity... all of which was promptly resolved by the manager Mr Danny Mynar...
