George's Lowcountry Table

I wish I could give it 2.5 stars, but 3 is too many. To be fair, we've only been once, and it wasn't bad...but it wasn't great either. We got a fried crawfish appetizer, but there was too much breading, and the crawfish flavor was almost non-existent. For our main courses we got the seared scallops over grits and eggplant pirogue (with shrimp and crab stuffing). The scallops were cooked well, but had virtually no sear to them (4/6 didn't even have any brown to them at all), which was disappointing (because come on...that crispy outside is the best part). The grits were pretty good though. As for the eggplant pirogue, the seasoning on the crab was overwhelming...very italian sausage-like, which didn't really go with the crab, and the eggplant "boat" it came on was completely flavorless. To make matters worse, I'm not sure if they were just busy, understaffed, or what, but our waitress was actually the bartender, and didn't really want a whole lot to do with us. Normally I'm all for trying everything twice, but I don't make enough money to go here a second time.

Awesome place to eat . food is great and atmosphere is too.

Really liked it. reminded me of Bissett's without the downtown hassle!

Went for the brunch. Overall it was a real "miss". They tried on the service but it just did not cut the mustard. I tried to get our waiter's attention and he just looked over our heads. Finally my husband just put his hand in the air. That did get their attention so I could ask for some help with my eggs. We both had the Eggs Benedict. This could have been a very good dish but the hollandaise sauce was not warm. It was room temperature. The eggs were poached perfectly so this was a shame. It appears what they are doing is making up the sauce, biscuit, fried green tomatoes and county ham in advance. Then they poach their eggs and grab the rest of the made up ingredients and put it all together and serve counting on the eggs to make the dish pass. It didn't. The worse part was the not-even-close-to-warm sauce which had it been even slightly warm would have been very good but a room temperature it was pretty awful. The potatoes served to the side were also not hot. The salt shaker on our table was a solid block of salt. We couldn't get the waiters attention so we went ourselves got salt off another table. That table had a pepper shaker that was completely empty. This a half hour after opening. I would say that pretty much sums up the way this place appears to do their food. Half attention to food while taking awful shortcuts and no attention to the details that make dining out enjoyable. What a disappointment. Much better places in Athens to have brunch. I would avoid this one.

Phenomenal dining experience, incredibly delicious menu. We had shrimp and grits appetizer, crab cakes, and quail polenta that was to die for. Highly recommended!
