We went to the Laurel on a busy Friday night. Our service was wonderful, our waitress was a short young gal (I forget her name) that was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. The food was great as always. Although after this experience I will not be taking my family back to the Laurel. The owner was bartending and we could hear her go in the kitchen and yell at an employee. We then sat and had an after dinner drink at the bar, the owner talked about herself the WHOLE time. The owner has no problem yelling at employees in front of customers at the bar either. I feel bad for the employees, they are always so friendly, but to have to work like a person like that...
Great dining... Huge portions, so order lightly. Popovers rocked!
The service was fantastic and attentive, though I wouldn't have expected any less, as there were only four tables, of people, including us, the whole time we were there. We had the Steak Dinner For Two, which was reasonably priced at $40. The steak was under-done (way better than over done) in the middle, but was completely brown, on both sides. This is what happens when restaurants cook to temp, instead of cooking steaks correctly (low and slow). We ordered the steak medium-well - it came out with blood on the plate and even more blood, when we cut it open. The steak by itself, didn't have much flavor, but this could have been b/c their seasoning had MSG in it. We told the waitress we didn't want any MSG in our food, which eliminated all but one salad dressing (oil & vinegar), all the soups and likely their steak seasoning. Honestly, I don't see how restaurants are even allowed to serve food with MSG in it, anymore, but apparently, this one uses it in a lot of their food. I saw a lot of online reviews, which listed $10-$15 as the higher end, for pricing, However, I didn't see anything on the menu, under $10, that wasn't an appetizer or part of the children's menu. I could have missed a few things, but most of their main dishes were closer to $18-$25 - still not bad, if it was exceptional food. Only three desert choices (NY Cheesecake, Lava Cake & an Ice Cream Sundae), the night we went and none of them were something which I had to try. This "Supper Club" didn't live up to the name or the hype, but the food was decent enough to eat their again.
We wet there to enjoy a good meal on Valentines day 2/14/2014 and were totally disappointed. Reservation was for 7:30pm. Got seated at 7:55 and was served one glass of water and a popover by the busboy. We sat at our table for 45 minutes and never once was approached by a waiter or waitress. They walked past our table like we weren't even there. Finally we had enough and walked out after 50 minutes of being ignored. Will never go back and do not recommend this place to anyone.
I LOVE THE LAUREL! My husband and I have been going there for over 20 years. The food is homemade, very good, and very reasonably priced. The service is always excellent -- even when they are really crowded and the waitstaff is stretched thin. The steak dinner for two is what we always get, and we've never been disappointed. The relish / appetizer tray is INCLUDED, and the liver pate is to die for! Everyone who has ever accompanied us to the Laurel has loved it, and they are hooked. The bar makes excellent cocktails, and I personally adore their signature Cosmopolitan. The place reminds me of someone's grandma's dining room.... so cozy!! I hope we can go there for years to come. Update: the appetizer tray isn't free anymore, but it's reasonable, and the liver pate is sooooooooo good!!
