This place is called the happy chef, but I don't think it was that, exactly. If anything, the chef was complaining about not getting paid to work there the entire time we were sitting there. In fairness, that conversation might have been taken out of context - I don't know. The food was on the low end of edible and I got the distinct impression that restaurant, and indeed the entire town, was on the verge of economic collapse. The quality of the food was lackluster for the price. That said, when you're passing through Kadoka, North Dakota there's not much to choose from. If you got to eat, you got to eat. None of us got sick, so it's not the worst food possible. The waitress was friendly enough, I guess.

Surprisingly happy with our stop @ Happy Chef. Produce was fresh and crisp, breakfast was very good. Clean tables, places, etc and bathrooms. The 2 things that detracted were the loud music coming from the kitchen and not real butter with the toast and pancakes… also the carpets could use a shampooing.

Stopped here on the way to the Black Hills. The place is fine, and the staff is nice and friendly. The prices are steep for what you get. My wife for example ordered chicken strips and paid $12. I attached photos of the menu for reference. Decent place but might be better off driving a little further to Wall.

Waitress very nice. Food was good.
