Irises Cafe & Wine Bar
Reviews
In town from Saratoga, this place was suggested. I'm not a huge wine connoisseur but liked the cafe idea, and it looked upscale enough to be pleasant. Seems to be a great wine selection, though obviously pricey. The food was average at best, service was excellent. We travel to Boston frequently, and are well aware of what constitutes quality food. We got the distinct impression that this place is about image first and foremost, drinking second, and food quality a distant third. Anthony's is a far better choice, and barely more expensive.
I was visiting Plattsburg and my friend suggested we dine at Irises. We had a table outside and that was nice. The server and hostess were very nice. I was not concerned on their pricing however I will warn you if you are on a tight budget this is probably not going to be the place for you. The average is 20$ + per plate. House glass of wine is 8+ dollars a glass so the Average person is going to be a 35$ experience. Their entree's come with rice which I wanted to opt out of and asked for a side salad instead and to just add whatever that would be for me to substitute. They literally put that in place of the rice on the plate and all. I got the Shrimp Scampi so the vegetable and the salad all on the place with the shrimp made all the food soggy. Why they didn't put the salad in a bowl and just bring me a side salad is beyond me. I'm not overly picky so I didn't mind the food touching. They charged me for a side salad and gave me about half of what they put in a normal side salad on a place. This place is supposed to be upscale. Example of incompetence coming out of the kitchen. I'm shocked that the head cook in there allowed it.
Service depends on your waiter. On 3 different occasions, either specials or standard entrees unavailable due to "chef error!" This used to be a very good restaurant, but seems to have sat on its laurels and crushed them. Even the "famous crab cakes" were dry and mingy in taste and appearance. Current philosophy seems to be: Get the customer drunk and serve them whatever.
We were on our way to Montreal when we knew we needed to stop for a late lunch hoping to sit by Lake Champlain. Because of the time of year, we couldn't find a place. So we drove into town , playttsburg, and found Irises Cafe and wine bar. Thank goodness. Great place for food, great friendly bartender, and owner Carol told us some wonderful places to eat in Montreal. A must stop before heading north to Montreal because its worth five minutes off 87.
Very good, in terms of what you can find in Plattsburgh!! We came here for lunch and had a really friendly waitress. Most of us ordered sandwiches or burgers, they were all very decent! After our meal, we picked up some mini cupcakes at Delish next door. Would recommend both places!!
