The review below was from a year ago. I have really enjoyed the food and friendly service at H&A since then. It is the regular lunch place for my gang to meet. HOWEVER, the gang went to H&A on Friday, November 7th and were very disappointed to find that they have substituted shoestring fries for the full cut fries that we have enjoyed so much over the years. ALSO, the Hells Bells burger that is one of my favorites was changed as well. It was so full of mayonnaise that it dripped out of the burger. Shame on you for making these changes. I will give you one more chance, then look for another lunch rendezvous. As of today, 3 stars. (the staff is still awesome.) Last year: I have been going to the Horse & Angel about once a week for about a year now. I was shocked when I read the reviews. Something must have changed between the time the other reviews were written and my experience. Here is what I have experienced: 1. Really good food. Even my wife likes it. 2. Good variety of food. 3. The wait staff is very professional. Friendly and caring. Not just pretty faces. 4. The clientel is well-mannered, making it a good place for families. 5. I have had to wait on my check a little longer than I would have liked a couple of times out of about 50. I usually find one or two items on menues that I come back to time and time again, but I have found at least 1/2 dozen on the menu at H&A that I find exceptional. For example the cajun catfish, the chicken fried steak, the tacos and any burger on the menu are better than most. One very special touch is that H&A does not add tax to your meal. The price of every item ends in either .00, .25, .50 or .75, making it easy to find the right change and calculate a tip. I tend to tip a little higher here than I do at most places because the service is always excellent.
Best food and service in town.
Let me fill you in, my wonderful gf who was turning 21 at midnight, wanted to order a drink as a right of passage. We called ahead to ask if this was okay, we got a yes. When we got there we explained the situation again, and they let us in on the basis that she order after 12. We sat down relieved, for we had been two other places before and they kicked us out. After the 2 friends ordered, which took a while, they came and asked us to leave. Wtf! Not before they let us order, and we were told we could stay and that she could order a drink, it was outrageous that they didn't tell us the 3 times before we ordered, and then we were "escorted" out. All in all just another reason not go there on my chalkboard.
Good food and drinks, especially the nachos. Even the "half nachos" is huge and for a good price. The bad is the service. My group and I sat down and were served drinks pretty quick, but it was an hour until we were given menus. She came by several times to pick up glasses or drop off waters, but it was literally lightning fast, and she made no eye contact, and did not ask if anyone needed anything. Finally, we flagged her down and asked for menus. Perhaps she assumed we only wanted drinks, but it's her job to ask and serve. She did later apologize saying they were understaffed, but it was still unacceptable to me.
This is in New Mexico and they won't show the Dallas Coyboys on Sunday, WTF?!? Last time I come here. :(
