Rock Creek was the nearest exit when we needed a potty break, and we decided to check the menu while we were there. What a lucky call that was. The place is way less crowded than the better-known midway spot up the road. The service is cheery and attentive, and the food is delicious and arrives piping hot. I'll be on the lookout for the Rock Creek Cafe for my halfway stop between the Twin Cities and Duluth from now on.
This is an awful establishment. The food is rotten and the management has no respect for its customers.
I'm always looking for a 'different' place to eat when I'm on the road headed to northern Minnesota. Often times I find myself stopping at McDonald's or some other fast food joint simply out of convenience or because I'm making good time and don't want to drive too far off of the interstate. This time around I decided to plot out a couple of diners for the trip with the criteria being 1) it had to have a review or two saying the food was good, 2) it had to have reasonable pricing, and 3) it had to be close to the interstate. Enter Rock Creek Cafe. When we first arrived my wife and I looked at each other slightly concerned as the restaurant is connected to a gas station and the entire facility looked a little worn. She told me to go inside by myself and report back. When I first walked in I was pleasantly surprised. It was clean, well lit, and full of people. I reported back and we all agreed to give it a try. We found a table easily and a very nice waitress stopped by shortly after we were seated. We arrived just before noon and by the time we left there were folks waiting for tables. We placed our orders after asking a few questions to the waitress. My wife ordered the 'famous' chicken dumpling soup and a couple of warm rolls and I ordered breakfast which is served all day. I realized, after placing my order for a ham and cheese omelet, that they had a board of daily specials. The breakfast special was a skillet filled with cheese, onion, and green pepper covered hash browns and two eggs with two pieces of toast. I asked the waitress if I could change my order to that and she happily asked the cook who said it would be no problem, just a minute or two longer than expected as he had to make the hash browns. I made the right choice in switching meals by the way. The food was great. It was flavorful without being too salty or greasy. The pancakes are the size of the plate and are also good. I want to stress how nice the wait staff is. They were very accommodating and friendly. We ended the meal with two pieces of pie. One apple and one banana cream. Both were homemade by "Donna". The banana cream was better than the apple but overall both pies were pretty good. Not the best I've ever had. This will be our new regular stop when traveling through the area. The price, location, and food quality is right on. Give it a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Great fresh country food! nice staff, small, clean. Def. old school cafe dining. Relaxing.
When heading north out of the Twin Cities I always stop here. The friendly staff and hearty food make you feel good. It is a great way to start any trip. The SPECIALS are fun to watch and try a variety of items. My wife loves the mashed potatoes with gravy. My favorite are the hash browns and of course the soup is spectacular.
