Nosh Kitchen Bar
Reviews
I am shocked to see some negative reviews on this place. Not sure how I found it a year ago, but this is my go-to joint for unbelievably great tasting food and some great beer to go with it. We're from Boston, no stranger to great restaurants. And Portland does have some of the best (contrary to what others believe). But if we're down by the waterfront and have a craving for a burger, we trek the distance up to Nosh, walking past all the other great restaurants along the way. The Nosh burger is good, but by far my favorite is the Slab burger. What a fantastic combination - Slab pizza for the bun. I have never had such a great combination of flavors! By the way, if you're interested in some really unique, interesting Sicilian-style "Pizza", visit Slab down the street. Owned by the same guy. Only problem is that, like many restaurants in Portland, the wait can be excessive. We went to Nosh (for my fourth time) last night and had to wait 45 minutes to get a seat. But not a problem - they have a patio area out front where we could take our beers and do some people watching. The hostess came out about 30 minutes later to tell us two seats were available at a common table if we were interested. As with the three other times, we loved the place!!!
If I'm driven to write a review it's either because the food and the experience was really, really good or really, really bad. Unfortunately, I’m writing this review because this place all around was just really, really bad! While visiting my sister in Portland, instead of eating at one of the many seafood restaurants near the water, for some ungodly reason she made me walk like 25 minutes out of the way to go to the Nosh Kitchen Bar for the “best burgers!” I guess if you like to pay $25 for an overcooked burger with duck liver on it, man have at it! The food was overpriced, the burgers were overcooked (didn’t even give you a choice of how you like it cooked) and the beer was warm! Do yourself a favor and “Nosh” on some seafood down by the docks! You can thank me later!
My husband and I went here for a drink and saw an appetizer that we wanted to try. We asked the bartender if one of the "toppings" could be ommited, due to a dietary restriction, and she said it shouldn't be a problem and went to ask. She returned with a guy who acted completely annoyed. He questioned us WHY, rolled his eyes, shrugged his shoulders and was insulted by the request. We were so put off by his attitude and inflexability! After he had walked out the front door, the bartender was even embarrassed and apologized for his behavior. Then she told us he was one of the OWNERS!! Bottom line: Nosh is very unaccomodating. There are SO many bars and restaurants in town where they make you feel welcomed and have no problem with leaving a topping off a dish- Nosh is NOT one of them!
Now I might be partial because i'm from NYC and am used to the best food in the world Lets face it, maine may be beautiful, but it surly is not know for it's great dishes. In a small town like Portland it's easy to conform people into thinking this is the best place to eat. After living in NYC, Atlanta, San Fran, and several other places in the states and abroad i'm giving this an average rating. Problem is that many Maine people thing this is the best food they've had in their lifetime. Now, Maine, just like England and Ireland is not known for it's good cooking and neither is Portland. My opinion, this is just one of many over priced places to eat in Maine. Strange as it might seem, NYC has much better restaurants and a much lower price. When I first had a pizza here ti was like eating out of a cardboard box. In conclusion, NOSH is like many other places in Maine, over priced, rude staff, average food, and and an annoying Maine crowd thaT keeps me away after 12 am, Strange at is may seem, there are better restaurants in NYC for half the cost. And you don't get half the noice or attitude that you will here in good ole portland maine.
Felt right at home walking in here.
