I had their special "Surf and Turf" of the evening which was Rack of Lamb and crabcakes. I got two double chops from the rack and one of the best crabcakes I've ever tasted. Add the lemon cream sauce that came with it and it was THE best crabcake I ever had. The lamb was delicious as well, with a nice char and crazy good crust on the outside and perfectly done on the inside. The sauce for the lamb was equally good and somehow went so well with the cream sauce from the crabcake that it didn't matter if they mixed as they complimented each other so well. I mopped up what was left with the crusty bread from the basket on the table and sent back a plate with just lamb bones. My wife enjoyed her filet mingon as well and even though they didn't have a kids menu, we were told just to order whatever they wanted and they would make it for them. They both loved their meals as well. My 6 year old boy was the only one with room for desert and got homemade cookies and cream ice cream that tasted like they used actual Oreos to make and the small taste I had made me wish I had room for desert. The only hiccup was when I ordered oysters on the half shell and one had brown juice when I poked it with my fork. Too be fair, it looked like a perfectly good oyster until I stabbed it and the rest were good. The owner apologized profusely for allowing a bad one to get by and brought out two new good ones to replace it. We were visiting from Pennsylvania and will be back when we return next year.
Took my wife in for our anniversary last week and wanted to leave a comment in light of TS's review. We had an excellent meal and were well taken care of by the staff and the owner who made sure that we were happy. I had the oyster fritter that I have had many times over the years, it was delicious as always. My wife had the crab cakes that are bar none, the best in Chestertown. No filler in there! I would recommend the Blue Heron to anyone that wants solid food, table linens, and competent service.
OUTSTANDING FOOD & CUSTOMER SERVICE ~ On a recent trip for our anniversary dinner my husband and I had a wonderful meal Our waitress was very professional & accommodating to our needs. The food (as MKHH stated, I ordered the Jambalaya as well) was served hot and spicey!! Just the way I like it. The manager / owner even stopped at our table to wish us happy anniversary and thanked us for our visit. In Chestertown this is THE PLACE IT EAT!!!
I too had heard great things about this place so we went with family who lives nearby. We ordered several appetizers which took at least 45 minutes to arrive while the place was not busy. We made it known we wanted to order drinks with dinner and not with our appetizers. As soon as our appetizers arrived, literally every 5 minutes our waitress came over and asked if we like drinks. "No, please, we'll order wine with dinner" - still every 5 minutes with no let up. We finish our appetizers and wait an additional 30 minutes for our entrees to arrive. When we received them, our hearts sank. My girlfriend ordered salmon. It was a unbelievably small piece with one or two pieces of asparagus and less than 5 small pieces of potato arranged on the plate. She's a very light eater but was hoping for more than that. The salmon was well over cooked and leathery as a result. I received my jambalaya. It was disgusting. The scallops were over cooked and chewy, the shrimp was overcooked and very stringy and, worst of all, there was so much cayenne pepper it made the dish inedible. And, if that's not enough, the rice was undercooked. We skipped on drinks as were unhappy overall. When the waitress came back, again asking if we wanted drinks, we told her how unhappy we were with the meal. No apology, the owner did not come over to discuss this with us. It was insulting but we didn't want to make a scene. We did not finish our food - we couldn't, we just paid and left. There are people in Chestertown who swear by this place but we found our dinner there to be insulting and, quite frankly, disgusting. There are better places with more down to Earth and pleasant attitueds to be found in Chestertown and Rock Hall. This place has the pomp and the price but nothing else.
Next day, sickening gas and diarrhea attacking both of our intestinal body functions. Resulting from the old tuna fish and canned soup we were served. Unfortunately, we told the truth and stated we were from out of town, that was our mistake, the owner served us the oldest and foulest meal possible. Whatever you do, lie. Tell him you are in town to buy an apartment building and settle down in Chestertown... a pretty sad place and a miserable meal.
