Firefly Grill
Reviews
The Firefly Grill is magnificent example of what is possible with food both visually, texturally and most importantly tastes amazing. . The owners, Kristie and Niall Campbell incorporate magical culinary revelations into stunning food dishes and ideas. But better even than the food (really?!) is the staff. They are capable of adapting their service style to the guests' attitudes, being more formal with some guests and more relaxed with others. The staff works together as a well-oiled machine, always at hand when you needed them, but never hovering or intrusive. If you find yourself driving through the Crossroads of America, (Effingham, Il - home of the worlds largest baby) where I-57 and I-70 meet, be sure to stop at the Firefly Grill.
Chef Joseph Mason is a hidden gem in cuisine. My husband and I dined at Firefly Grill on an overnight layover for our honeymoon.Couldn't decide on what to order, so I asked our waitress, Annette, to ask Chef to cook whatever he'd like. Our meal was phenomenal - a perfectly cooked duet tasting of lamb and the chicken Spitz with curry pasta.Personal attention, requisite attention to detail, fresh, well-balanced food all make Firefly Grill Rodeo a wonderful experience.Go there for dinner - AVOID the "scene" crowd that comes at lunchtime. The night air with a lovely bottle of wine coupled with the twinkling lights of the plaza add to the romantic flavors. Bravo, Chef Mason!!!
Very tasty food, great drink selection. Eco-chic more than eco-conscious; we were not impressed by the bottled water or the seafood fare. They will ask you your choice of salad/soup after your order as if it came with the dinner and charge you for the additions. We did not expect that and thus had $10+ on our bill we were not expecting.
Full disclosure: I worked as a cook here in 2013. The food is amazing. From the brick oven fired pizzas, steaks and fish, to the french fries, everything here is delicious. The price is very high for the area, and too high for most locals, but you have to understand some of the reasons for that. Everything is actually made in house, often from ingredients grown out back in the gardens. It takes a lot of cooking staff to make sauces from scratch, clean and prep vegetables, cut meats, and other prep work that most restaurants don't do because they get stuff from cans made in factories. Everything is CRAFTED at Firefly. The cooks are the most passionate foodies I've ever met. They take a lot of pride in their work and frankly don't get paid enough for their art (like most cooks). The Firefly is definitely one of the top restaurants in the midwest. And if price is a concern, go during lunch and get a lunch special.
What a find!! Must stop here! Halibut was fantastic. Perfectly cooked. Corn super fresh. Delicious fried green tomatoes.
