Mama's Fish House
Reviews
The food, service, and view were all amazing. I got the curry dish and the server told me it would be one of the best curries I'll ever try and he was right. It as a delight for my taste buds. Our server was as friendly as could be and had very descriptive details of each dish as well as the restaurant as a whole. They catch their fish early morning and create a new menu each day based on their catch and devise new dishes each day. If you have some time to spare before being seated Mama's has their own private beach for you to lounge on or for enjoying while you digest. Be sure to make reservations well in advance as this place is one of the most popular restaurants on the island. Parking is done through complimentary valet. Stop by Mama's if you're ever in Maui!
What an incredible experience! My boyfriend took me here for a surprise dinner in January 2015 for my 30th birthday while we were vacationing in Maui. Wow! The views are stunning. You get the north shore waves crashing on the beach, palm trees that definitely remind you that you are somewhere tropical, and beautiful white sand. There are plenty of places to take photos because it's just beautiful everywhere. You have someone greet you at the entrance from the parking lot overlooking the beach. He/she checks too see if you have reservations or need them. They let you into their property grounds, and then the aforementioned breath-taking views come in. Once you're done taking photos, you can check in at the 2nd entrance. If your table isn't ready, you can sit in the bar area while you wait. I must admit that this place is crawling with tiki decor. But don't let that fool you from how amazing the food, service, and view are. Their sushi is amazing and fresh. Their waiters are so helpful and happy to help. And did i mention the views? We got to sit by an open window watching the waves crash on shore. This place is casual Hawaiian, or a very special night out. The ambiance surprisingly fits both occasions.
We did the road to Hana and on our way back to Wailea we stopped and had an early dinner at Mama's. It is right next to the best surfing beach and it is a treat to watch the surfers, wind surfers, and the waves. Sits right on the ocean with a big sandy area outside the restaurant. Free valet and then down the steps to the back of the restaurant to be seated. We ate in the lounge because the main dining room is closed till 4pm. The food was the best we have had so far in hawaii. It's pricey - but it was yummy. Everything seems to be a la carte in Maui. We aren't used to that - but the servings were plenty. Had homemade bread and a little tomatoe bisque shooter. Then we had the wonton shrimp appetizer which was very good. I had the stuffed mahi mahi and it was very good. My husband had the ono and it was very tasty. Our son had the shrimp on the keiki menu and he said it was good. It's pricey. Meals are 45-55 for adults and 20 for kids. I think it is worth it and would reccomend it from the kitchy decor to the setting to the names of the fisherman on the fish. Definitely worth the trip.
Long-touted as a Maui institution, and now I know why. I was fully expected to feel a little let down after all the hype, but it went way above and beyond my expectations. First: free valet parking. They could rake in boatloads more cash by charging for parking with all the people that come to this place, but they keep the valet parking free--nice. Second: complimentary umbrellas for the unpredictable Paia weather--just pick up and drop off at various locations around the whole place. Third: The amazing oceanfront location and well-kept grounds. If you arrive early for your reservation and got some time to kill you can take a walk around the beautiful beach and soak in the atmosphere. Fourth: the restaurant is gorgeously decorated; very Hawaiian, but not cheesy. Beautiful native flowers everywhere as well as paintings, glass works, sculptures and other works of art. Fifth: Great service; everyone was so nice, friendly and helpful, it was kind of a shock. One of the waiters accidentally splashed us when he dropped a fork into the bouillabaisse but he profusely apologized and came back with a glass of club soda and a napkin to wipe off the drops. Also, my friends told them it was my bday (well, close enough) and they gave me a lei and a complimentary mango ice cream dessert--very nice! Sixth: GREAT food. Yes, it's pricey--at first we were a little agog at the prices--but after our meal we really felt like we got our money's worth. They give you a very cute complimentary loaf of bread with butter and also little teeny cups of bisque--both were very good. We started things off with the following cocktails: mai tai, plantation punch, and The Relaxer (a rather ominous name but delicious cocktail)--all very good and generously poured. We got a half dozen oysters and ended getting another order, they were so good. Also an order of their won ton shrimp, which were giant prawns wrapped in won ton skins and perfectly fried, served with a mango salsa that was divine. As for entrees, I had their signature dish, the mahi mahi stuffed with crab and lobster with a macadamia nut coating, wow. One friend had their lobster tails, which were probably the best lobster tails I've ever had--very succulent and sweet. Another person at our table had the seafood bouillabaisse, which was just loaded with all kinds of goodies: shrimp, squid, scallops, fish, crab and lobster. Afterwards all we could do was just sag into our seats, stuffed to the gills with so much goodness. The bill reflected all the goodness we'd consumed, but we all thought it was well worth it. We were so happy with our visit, in fact, we were thinking of coming back for the final meal of our trip, (this was our inaugural meal in Maui) but alas the timing didn't work out and we couldn't go back. But you bet I'll be back the next time in town! Oh, definitely make reservations to score the best seats; we were in the open-air dining area off to the side and it was awesome to be able to take in the sunset while dining.
It was one of the best times we had out, No rush, great service , great food and super atmosphere and view. Thak you MAMA,Cliff Rose, Lloydminster Alberta
