InterContinental The Clement Monterey
Reviews
I recently stayed there for an event at Laguna Seca. The last evening I placed my prized AMG racing helmet in the trunk while leaving my car at the valet. The next morning I had the bell hop put my bags in my trunk only to discover that the helmet was stolen when I took my bags out once I got home. The parking contractor and the hotel denied any liability although the AMG driving academy offered to replace the helmet for free. AMG gets it. The InterContinental has no clue how to address situations like this. I will not be staying at any of their properties going forward.
Overall this is a great hotel to stay. It was our first time in Monterey and obviously first time at this hotel. We chose this for a 1 night getaway for our 2nd marriage anniversary. Here is a breakdown of the review: The Good: 1 - Excellent location. Right at the waterfront and their patio is amazing for chatting up and having a few drinks! 2 - The hotel staff is exceptionally warm and nice and accommodating. They say yes to almost all of your requests! This is a rarity nowadays 3 - The rooms and bathrooms are spacious and have comfort thought out to the smallest possible detail! 4 - The location from the town perspective is awesome as it is right in the heart of Monterey (right next to the Monterey Aquarium). The Bad: 1 - The person who checked us in kind of was being sarcastic with us when I asked if we could get a free upgrade. I had heard about them being nice enough to upgrade you to better rooms, especially if it is the first time and if you have a special occasion that you are visiting for. I asked him if he could do anything for us in terms of an upgrade and he said, very sarcastically, "you mean upgrade you for free" and I said yeah that would be amazing. He obviously denied that. Anyway I didn't bother much and went on with my business. 2 - The bed sheets were littered with hair from previous guests I would assume. The pillow cover was ripped and had holes in it. The comforter made us both totally Itchy (no, we do not have allergies to down) and it was so bad that we had to ask them to change all the linens at 11:30 at night! 3 - The air conditioner was broken. When we checked in to the room at about 5 p.m. I had turned on the A/C and set it to cool down to about 65 from 73. After 5 hours the temperature in the room still showed 73 and it was hot! I called the guest services for this and they said that they have been aware of this issue since late afternoon but they haven't had any luck in getting an engineer on site to look at it and so it will be until the next morning that it will be fixed. I asked them if they have a portable fan and they said no and suggested that I should open the balcony door. This was at 11:30 p.m. and since our room was overlooking their outside patio restaurant, it was impossible for me to do this as there were people sitting there and chatting so there was a lot of noise. We basically were not able to sleep at all and were sweating through the night! I called at about 8:30 in the morning asking if they were able to fix the A/C so I could get a few hours of sleep in before check out time and they said that it should have been done and I told them it isn't working still. Nothing happened until we checked out basically! 3 - Parking! OMG they have Valet service for $23/night. I asked the guy about self parking and he said you surely can. I mentioned to him that that would be free right if I self park and he said no, that is $23 as well! I was like WTF....what is the difference then. Why would someone want to self park if the price is the same. Usually people charge for a service that they provide and not for self parking! Anyway it was our anniversary so I was in no mood to argue and chose to Valet park! The only nice part about this was that the manager said that she will take off $75 off our bill, which I felt was not sufficient considering we had paid premium for this hotel and were not able to sleep at all through the night! The manager was pretty smart about it and all she did was come up with $75 in a way that no major credit would go back to my card as our incidentals were about $65! Again, I just wanted to get it done with and so didn't bother on arguing or asking for anything and just lived with it. The only take away from this - I am not sure if I would stay again in this hotel. Plenty of other hotels to choose from around the area and in Carmel.
Lovely hotel! Great location right on the water and the cannery row. The hotel is very new and modern, nice contemporary decor. Large fitness room with new machines with built in TV. There's a small long but narrow lap pool, well designed. Some of the rooms have full ocean view. Valet parking or self parking $23 per day.
It was over priced for the facilities and services provided. There were a shortage of washcloths. 2 wash clothes for 4 guests. 1 soap. The room was offered to be cleaned at 4:50 on one of the days. This seems late. The hot tub was not hot. The service was slow. It was lack luster, despite the promising pics online. I was not impressed.
Wonderful friendly staff and great service. Very professional. Easy walking distance to all the shops and restaurants. Classy and clean. My wife and I enjoyed our stay there and would definitely recommend and go there again.
