Fergusson Winery & Restaurant
Reviews
Four of us recently went for a weekday lunch and having read the reviews we were very wary of what to expect, but we went anyway and yes the decor is a little dated but the food was large serves and quite acceptable and the prices very reasonable compared to some other wineries. The lass serving [on her own ] did a great job of attending to everyone. My only comment would be the male toilets are very much in need of a make over, there were black water marks down the back of the bowls, not a good look. Would we go again ...yes.. but would hope they will at least up-grade the toilets and improve the decor a little.
We ended up at Fergusson Restaurant as some others were fully booked out. Staff were friendly but took ages to come to our table with a menu, (although the restaurant was almost empty). While my home made pie was very good, my daughter's pasta with smoked salmon and prawns, was not good at all. However she sent the dish back and we were able to obtain a refund. We'll give Fergusson a miss, the next time that we visit the Yarra Valley region.
The restaurant is set in a beautiful location but has no views of the vineyards. The interior is clean but dated. The menu, well I thought we'd be getting something special with trio of dips, goat's feta, olives, pork belly.... Sounds delightful, but it was just okay. The dips were straight from the Swan dip range at the supermarket, the feta was cubed so big it had to be cut up, the olives were gigantic too, and the pork belly had no crunch and tasted a bit like it had been reheated. The pork was served with pickled red cabbage (which I think was also straight from the supermarket shelf) and a pile of spinach with no dressing. Oh and the pork had a small splodge of (jar) apple sauce. I'm sure this place would do great for weddings when they have proper chefs and staff on, but I think going on any old weekend you stumble into the same girls who do everything at the vineyard from picking through to tastings, cooking, serving and the dishes at the end. But, I must say the pork was just $20 (upped from $16 entree) so it was reasonable for the price.
Great carvery (my first since I emigrated from England 8 years ago), beautiful grounds and most importantly; delicious wine!
Take a pass on Fergusson, too many good ones in area worth exploring. This one is sterile, no ambiance, and staff is sub par.
