Off The Hookah

Some friends and I tried to get in this club on a Saturday night. One of my friends were wearing a zebra print dress, solid black tights, and black pumps. We were turned away because of her wardrobe, but looked up and saw that another woman was granted entry wearing jeans and Ugg boots o_O. We were told that no one with animal print clothing is allowed in the club and started to walk away. On the way to another club we passed someone wearing leopard print leggings, we turned around and watched this person get in line to get in Off The Hookah. We had hoped that she would be turned away as well because we didn't want to feel like WE were being singled out. Unfortunately the previous reviews of this club were proven right because the girl with leopard print leggings was granted access. So I had no choice, but to accept the obvious. The only difference b/w my group of friends and the two women who got in was race. I know how damaging it is to accuse an establishment of this and I don't use the term loosely, but I can't ignore something that's right in my face. It's such a downer to deal with racism, but I can't be totally sure that it's security's fault. Who knows if this is what they were instructed to do? You'd think the club's reputation would be monitored online and then addressed accordingly, buuuuut doesn't seem to be the case. So that leads me to think this is more that just some discriminating bouncers in Richmond, VA. IJS

If you're looking for a bar with good atmosphere then you'll enjoy this. The staff wasn't sure if they still offered hummus though. It is very spacious but the wide bar made it difficult to talk with the bartenders in regards to ordering anything. It was too loud to talk to them. Hookah is another story. They had a very limited selection in regards to sheesha flavors, some starbuzz and al fakor flavors, nothing really worth ordering. The only coals were quick light coals, no natural. The hookahs were the 60$ ones, nothing full sized, only the basic hoses, no ice hoses, and the bowls were needlessly tiny. Despite good reviews by local friends, the bar/club portion holds up better than the hookah side. It is awkward smoking hookah at a bar on a bar stool. You also need to go through the upper level street side doors, not the canal entrance. Bottom line: club/bar scene, good, hookah wise, it could use a good deal of improvement. If you're new to hookah, it is a good experience, but if you have seen the selection out there with natural coals with egyptian/syrian full sized hookahs, there is much to be desired. I am unsure what to rate it. "Dynasty shrimp is heavily fried shrimp with a dipping sauce that is a bit too acidic, it strongly overpowers the shrimp. I've been going Off The Hookah frequently for over a year now and I went there with one of my female friends on Saturday August 31st 2014. My friend was assaulted by a Racist Bartender. His name was Mike. She was simply trying to buy a drink and the bartender grabbed her arm, shook her and told her to F**K Off because she was Black, then proceeded to take the White people's orders at the bar. When she told him that she was going to report him to the manager, which she did, he told her that his manager won't do anything and told her F**K YOU. When we went to the manager he was like" I'm sorry that happened but I will talk to him next week. I can't talk to him right now because it is a busy night. Take my card and email me" then he left." She then went back to the bar and tried to get a drink to see if he was going to take her order and he totally ignored her. After that we decided to leave. I would say that they lost great customers because when we go there we spend at least $100 per person. We are never returning to that place. This is an unsafe environment for black people.

If could give them no stars I would rather do that, but I will get to the point. This establishment is horrible, the admission person at the front door literally tried to start a argument with me. They are extremely rude and unprofessional. Also they are extremely discriminatory, I can understand trying to keep your establishment at a certain level but to literally pick and choose who the rules apply to in front of the people is just plain disrespectful. In all I would have rather saved my time and went else where.

If you are looking for a place to relax with friends, share a hookah and be able to talk to eachother this is not the place to do it. Its an extremely loud nightclub with a poor floor plan, and hookahs.
