Great place to grab a bite to eat before or after a visit to the Shiner Brewery. The staff were very friendly and the food was very down-home and delicious. I had the special of the day which was 2 pieces of baked chicken, stuffing, coleslaw, a piece of white bread, and vanilla ice cream with a fruit topping for under $8. You can't beat the price and the food was good. Juicy and crisp chicken, nicely prepared coleslaw, and the dessert included made for a nice meal.
We stopped off here after a tour of the Spoetzl brewery. The food left much to be desired. The chicken could have been good if I could have tasted it through the grease. It tasted like they hadn't cleaned their grease in a long time. The turtle cheese cake tasted like they used a cheap substitute instead of cream cheese. It was grainy, dry, and not very sweet. The only thing that saved the dessert was the chocolate chunks in it. I didn't finish the cheese cake. If a fat guy doesn't finish his cheese cake, you know you have a problem. It seems like this place needs to scale back it's menu and "we do a little bit of everything" style and focus on the main product, chicken. If your signature dish is disgusting and greasy, there is a problem in your kitchen.
You'd think it's fast food, but it's not, it's more of a sit-down place. Be prepared to wait 15-30 minutes for your food. Other than that, I had a burger and my wife had a grilled chicken sandwich, both were perfect, exactly what you want when you're looking for the perfect small town in Texas food. Would definitely recommend this place when passing through Shiner.
After touring the Shiner Spoetzl Brewery, we were ready to eat. My fiance and I came here to have an early dinner before our long drive home to Georgetown. The place was empty except for an older couple drinking coffee. We ordered and grabbed a dirty booth near the dirty window as the tables were not wiped off. After over 40 minutes of stomach pains, we looked at the receipt time 3:51 and it was now 4:35. My fiance went up to the counter to ask if our food was ready. The woman asked what we had ordered and found our food sitting under the heat lamp. Apparently it was ready before the 4:00 shift change and she explained that the employees on the previous shift failed to tell her about the order. Not wanting to eat food that had been sitting out for over half an hour, he asked for a refund instead. The woman began yelling at him that since she was not to blame, she would not issue a refund and stormed off. Another employee came up to us and politely refunded our money, we left hungry and confused.
Quaint but w/ fastfood sensibility. Might hear old-timers chat in Czech, or see Czech phrases on t's walking through. --Clean. Hard boothes. Patio. Food trays & baskets. Drive-thru. --Fried chicken/livers, signature burgers, cfs, Icees, soda, ice tea, cookies, kolaches, rosettes, pigs, fried cod/shrimp, french & criss-cut fries, cheesesticks & pepper puppies, stuffed jalepenos, salad bar, etc. --My favorite eatery in Shiner.
