Spoons Cafe
Reviews
While I like Spoons Cafe and their cute little courtyard-like dining area, this review is mostly for Spoons Garage. I completely forgot all about Spoons Garage until the last time my husband and I were in Downtown Mckinney. It was Valentines Day and the streets were packed as usual and we were getting a little hungry and didn't want a lot of food before our big dinner later that evening and we also just didn't want to be in a crowded restaurant. Then a light bulb went off in my head! Around the corner from Spoons Cafe and away from from all the hustle and bustle, tucked away is Spoons Garage and Bakery. It's like a quiet little sanctuary in the middle of everything, almost the same menu as Spoons but made better by the peace you get from being able to hear your own thoughts and being able to hear the conversations you are trying to have. I get overwhelmed by crowds pretty easily but a stop at Spoons Garage and a bowl of those tasty sweet potato fries did just the trick. It's the place you forgot you actually liked.
We ate here on a Friday night when they had a live band going. It was great service and we enjoyed the band. The food was very well done. We really liked the 1/2 fried pickles & 1/2 fried okra appetizer.
We recently revisited Spoons, hoping they had put their original cottage potatoes back on the menu. (The original cottage potatoes were fresh cut red potatoes that were roasted with rosemary. They were delicious.) We were even more disappointed than ever by this recent visit. Not only were the cottage potatoes still frozen potatoes with no flavor at all, but the sausage had changed for the worse, the grits were instant, and our overall breakfast was cold. I ordered my eggs over medium, and the white of the eggs were so runny, I couldn't even eat them. The positives about the visit were the waitress and the coffee. Needless to say, we won't be going back. It seems like the owner has opted for profit instead of quality.
I was disappointed in the service we received from our server, Kimberly, today. I took my grandmother there for breakfast for her 92 birthday. Unfortunately, Kimberly, was too busy chatting with her co-workers in the back the entire time to even acknowledge her birthday, check on us, or refill her coffee (there were only 6 people eating in the entire restaurant, including us). She was keen enough to bring me change in big bills so that I could leave her a $5 bill for a tip though. The woman who seated us was lovely (she had long, dark black hair) and was very friendly. The omelets were good - and although the latte took a while to arrive, the monkey face design was very cute.
the ambience is great.... but the order taking is sketchy.... and they are too busy and too noisy to be great.
