Having driven by this restaurant numerous times, my wife and I decided to stop in for lunch on March 19. We both ordered the chicken fried steak as one of the reviews said it was very good. Our experience was awful. The breading on the chicken fried steak was good but my wife could not cut hers with a steak knife. Mine was ok around the edges but the majority was also tough as shoe leather. The waitress noticed that my wife was having a tough time cutting her steak with the table knife and she brought her a steak knife which did nothing to improve the issue. We pointed the toughness out to the waitress but obviously she was more interested in getting us out the door than comping the awful meal. At least now we know to not stop here again. Can't believe this place stays in business.
Unfortunately, the KK is apparently past its prime, possibly due to past over exposure on TCR and other media. I had heard they made a great burger -- my "Big K" was not even close. The "homemade" bun was dry, crumbly & stale. The meat was over cooked & dry. I love burgers, but most of this one was left on the plate. Worst of all -- the "famous" onion rings were greasy and COLD!. Other food maybe better, but for burgers--pass it by.
The food at Koffee Kup is fine, especially for a town the size of Hico. That said, there is no sign alerting people that they do not accept any kind of credit/debit card. If you are like most people these days who do not carry cash on them, you are then faced with having to pay to use their machine and get cash. The restaurant may make money off of this but it does so in a way that manipulates its customers and hurts wait staff in tips. Awful.
Excellent food, friendly service in a clean dining area. Not sure what the folks giving this place a one star were looking for, it is not Del Frisco's by any means, but it you want some good home cooking, then I highly recommend this place.
The Chicken Fried Steak is outstanding as is their Burgers. Get the onion rings(homemade). Can leave with out a big slice of pie. Coconut creme is my favorite!!! Always stop in when I'm riding my motorcycle through the hill country.
