Mike and his staff are great. The atmosphere is great. The food is good, but I wish there were more vegetarian options. It would also be nice to have wifi. If you live in Harlingen or if you are just visiting for a few days, include Java Cafe as one of your stops. It does not offer everything to everyone, but it offers enough things to enough people to make it a good place to get to know. The people are certainly more friendly than anything you will find at a chain operation.

I've only found places like this in the trendy college areas like Austin and Waco. It's Barnes & Noble-meets-Pop's Soda Shop from the '50's and '60's. Half of the place is a comfy book room with overstuffed furniture and half is an old-fashioned diner with memorabilia. The food selection is *hip* and the prices are just as contemporary. But you won't find a juicy homemade hamburger, family style service, and this kind of atmosphere at any of the major burger chains.

This place is adorable! It's like half library, half coffee/pastry shop. The prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is relaxed and happy. i love it! :D the people who work there don't really seem super friendly, which is one of the reasons i'm scared to go back lol, but if you don't mind that, i'd say, go!

Eating here makes one feel as if they were visiting Grandparents; as far as atmosphere and ambiance; you feel the love for the service provided. This is not your everdday cafe; also feel free to sit in and read a book; no purchase necessary.
