Houlihan's
Reviews
Houlihan's is a chain that thinks too highly of itself. We have have been there 3 times and they have struck out. When you walk in you notice a nice modern design with the lights at a very low level, only when we went during the day could we adequately see around the restaurant. The cool factor does not make up for the average food and lousy service. Don't get me wrong, they have a good bar and some nice menu items, but for overall dining at their price, it is a no go. The design is pretty cool, they have dark wood accents and colorful, but dim, lighting. On the walls are some pretty cool abstract art that I wouldn't mind in my own home. The franchiser has done well on this front. When you first walk in you are greeted by a very friendly hostess, but she is only able to smile and put you on a list. Sometimes handing you a buzzer when it is really busy. If it is busy, most nights and weekends, go to the bar and have a cocktail. I strongly suggest cocktail because the beer is bad. They have the standards, and I am sure they are as they normally taste, but these days craft brew is all the rage. I am a fan and so I am looking for some sort of microbrew. This is where you start to get the feeling that the place isn't as nice as it looks. They have one brewery, 4-corners located in Dallas, ok I'll try it. Whoa, bad, totally flat keg needs to be changed, this is my experience each time we go. It is also similar to other chains where the patrons only want domestic light beer. The good beer sits around and goes flat in the keg because only a couple of people order it each day. Moving on to the dining experience, our server had an attitude from the start. He did not want to be there, did not want to wipe down the table for the hostess, and took his time coming around for anything. This has been the case on every occasion that I have eaten at Houlihan's, it's like they have hired high school kids who were forced to get some kind of job but really don't want to work. The attitude of the 3 servers we have had is that we are a burden on their day. This time, we could not find the guy when we needed him. To be fair, he may have been oversat, but this is a management problem that they need to solve. It took way too long to get drinks, it was about 5 minutes between any contact - greet, drink order, bring water, bring drinks, order food. It really is silly to take 20 minutes before you even take our order. Thankfully the food did not take too long to arrive, luckily I ordered an appetizer soup. It was good, but nothing to rave about. Very salty, probably frozen from bags. I had the salad which was supposed to have buffalo chicken in it, but there was not much buffalo sauce. The waiter dropped off the food and said if we needed anything just ask, right. He did not come back to check on us for 10 minutes, so now I have a delima, eat the food without sauce or wait for him to come back, then wait for him to bring the sauce. I waited, and it really wasn't worth it. My girlfriend, however, had the chicken sandwich with bacon and gouda cheese. This was delicious, leading me to believe that if you know what to get on the menu, you can really get some good food.] I may be too harsh on this review, but this place charges way too much for what they offer. If you just want to sit at the bar and drink, it might be fine. But if you want to spend an intermediate amount of money on a good meal and dining experience, Houlihan's falls flat.
I think they have new management since they first opened cause it's a lot different. The problem I had though was the food was horrible. I ordered a cup of the tomato soup with the grilled cheese dumplings and it was sooo salty like almost acidic tasting. I also ordered just 1 of the veggie patty sliders to go with my soup. They gave it to me crispy, char burnt. Not just a little bit of burn but carbon that would flake off. I was really confused that they would see something so extremely burnt and still serve it to me. They were nice enough to get me a new one after I told them but still. Maybe it's cause they were busy but that's just no excuse. The food should be consistently good.

Love this place. Great, tasty food in a dim swanky atmosphere. Not your average menu choices. Chef prepared dishes.
