Saffron Cafe & Bakery
Reviews
Ordered a birthday cake for our visit to Charleston and it was great. They have parking in the front and the back so it is easy to get in and out. They have tables inside so you can sit down and enjoy their food. The candle they sell for birthday cakes is wonderful as well. Plays happy birthday as it turns slowly. Lite the center wick and it lights all the candles.
The bakery is wonderful. Staff have always been polite and helpful. Food has always been delicious. Especially the croissant sandwiches. Price is reasonable for downtown charleston.
Food has been fine, though largely unremarkable. My review is of the service, which has been consistently terrible every single time I've gone in. Dine in, take out, breakfast, lunch, winter, spring, summer... all bad. Everybody gets a pass for one or two rocky experiences, but slow, lazy, or indifferent service is the norm here. The hiring manager could stand a refresher course on what makes a valuable customer service rep. Or, keep giving the business a bad reputation and doing it and your customers a great disservice, what do I know? I'm just a lowly (former) patron.
Horrible customer service plus not so FRESH food! My husband and I ate there one time and we got this amazing vegan chocolate cake with an espresso drink (which came out very sloppy but we were like ehh ok) So I have been trying for a long time to get more of the cake and every single time I stop in they don's have it, they have no clue when they will or even if I can order one! Then on my last stop in there I was looking at their cold case with the cakes in it and the strawberries all had mold on them!!! Gross!! I worked in a bakery for years and I bet they turn their coolers off at night to save money and the cold cases are getting muggy in turn causing mold on the food! NOT COOL MAKING FOLKS SICK!!! and to top it off HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!!
OK food. Terrible serive, especially for Charleston. We came here to buy pastries and bread. We decided to get breakfast first. Such was a mistake. Having waited tables myself, I'm usually very patient with servers. Our was so terrible I had to leave her no tip. I ordered an orange juice with my breakfast. The food was OK. Nothing special. The waitress didn't bring my juice. We talked about it 3 times with her. She never brought it. After serving breakfast she just vanished for 20 minutes. She never brought my wife her cream for her tea. We requested it twice. Finally we waited forever for the check. Us and the table next to us waited so long we had to go to the hostesses to request our waitress. Finally she came out, and charged us for the juice I never got. We got it corrected. Zero tip for zero service. And my wife and I who expected to get pastries and breads to go afterwards and take them back go our families in Charlotte to share decided to skip this... which was the main reason we came here. So this place lost a customer who was probably going to buy $30-50 worth of baked goods. A terrible shame, especially since we had such great food and service everywhere else we went on our vacation. We had expected better and they struck out. Our waitress didn't even apologize. There is a reason on a Saturday morning hardly anybody was eating here. Apparently everybody in town already knows about this place and is staying away.
