Everything was great except the mashed potatoes tasted like instant--instant pot have a very distinctive aftertaste which is what I received with the potatoes on my hamburger steak order. Very disappointed in that--wonder if they gave Guy instant pot? What gives-they are not fast food and they are a notable café, why would they do this? The hamburgers and the hamburger steak were all really good. The grilled Chicken salad was good and the diet dr. pepper float was great! lots of ice cream with the soda instead of the token one dip. We have been to the Café before and will go again but I hope they get their potatoes straighten out and use real potatoes or at least ones that don't have that aftertaste. That is the reason for the missing star.
I wish there was an option for a 1/2 star... Not sure why Guy came here... the food was acceptable but the service was pathetic. Our kid was challenged as to her age when she ordered a kid's meal!!! Where does that happen? And she was 13 at the time. Never saw our waitress after she delivered our food. And one of the other wait staff practically sat down at our table showing us pictures of her grand kids!! Freaky!!! If you're travelling Route 66, there are plenty of other places to stop - skip this one. I have visited 31 other Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives restaurants and this one is at the bottom of the list! Oh... and they nickel and dime you for everything!!!
The food used to be better as well as the service :(
There's not much else going on in Stroud, but at least there's some good food. The Rock Cafe is just a small dining room, and the service is primarily locals, but there's some serious cooking chops in the kitchen, and that was even evident in the simple breakfast I ordered - a ham and cheese crepe with hashbrowns and a side of bacon. Though the dishes are not complex, the refinement with which each item was prepared is what impressed me - the hashbrowns had a crispy exterior and soft interior, the bacon had a premium fat distribution and was cooked with a weight on top so the strips would be perfectly flat, and the buttery crepe worked well with the cheddar cheese and ham. Complicated food is not necessarily better food, and Rock Cafe proves this well.
More atmosphere than flavor. The cobbler was good though.
