Bowl-A-Roll Lanes
Reviews
I disagree with the comments that are rating this alley in the "fair" category! Bowl a Roll is delightfully quirky, and I mean that in a good way. Unlike the slick and over-priced lanes in other parts of the city, this is a mom and pop kind of establishment. As a bowler there and as a league regular, I have come to know the staff and part of the charm for me is that they treat me like family. They can be gruff and yes, the running of the business can sometimes baffle me a little, but it is a place I love to be. The prices are lower than other alleys and it is family friendly in every way (unlike Clover Lanes with their questionable music videos). It is stepping back in time perhaps, but Bowl a Roll is a place we meet friends, take our children and chat with the regulars ....kind of like "Cheers where"everyone knows my name!
My biggest gripe with Bowl-A-Roll is how they host smokers. If you're a smoker, this is the perfect alley for you. The ash bins are right outside the front doors, which is ~20 feet recessed behind the front wall of the building. Especially in the winter, the smokers sit right outside the doors and fill the entryway with cigarette smoke. When it's particularly bad, you can smell the smoke when you're at the first 5 lanes. I have asked a friendly lady at the front desk if this was an item of concern. She said they have gotten complaints about it, but they do not want to anger the smokers by making them stand further out in the cold. She didn't have the power to make such a decision, but she said the owners have been approached about it in the past and have rejected any changes. The customer-facing employees here, for the most part, are friendly. The techs at the alley are most definitely not nice. They're rude and begrudgingly help with their antiquated equipment or stuck pins/gates. Finally, the equipment here is absolutely terrible. Nothing here has been replaced since the late 80s or early 90s. They have old CRT TVs, smoke-stained yellow enclosures, and terrible computer systems that are hard to operate and hard to read. They charge $3.75 per game and have leagues that are full many nights of the week. With the amount of money they have coming in, there is absolutely no reason they should not have upgraded by now. Their new bartender is also not the nicest. However, they do have decent drink specials (~$7 for a decent pitcher of beer.) *Sorry about the huge paragraph - google won't show the paragraph formatting.
They state they are open till 1-2 am, They swipe your visa and then tell you they are closing at 10 because business is slow. Um that isn't my fault or anyone else who payed $20.00 to bowl unlimited bowling which they advertise. I payed $20.00 to bowl 2 games, then the guy shuts down the lane. Terrible business ethics. To bad.
The bowling is good, but the workers are so rude and obnoxious. They act like youre dumb and very un-professional.
